In resisting trump's relentless assault on democracy, there is grave danger.

The danger is that our lives become consumed by the chaos, contempt, hatred, and rage that churn inside him.

If it feels like trump has corroded your soul, in this thread I offer a modest solution.
Since Jan 2017, the Resistance have fended off, among many things: the Muslim Ban, ACA repeal, the separation of migrant children from parents, the rise in bigotry & hate, and a trump defined political reality filled with lies, darkness, contempt, corruption & deep polarization.
We've dealt with a lot of darkness & tragedy and we've been fueled by justifiable anger and outrage.

Here's the danger, though-that in fighting darkness we become consumed by it and we begin to believe that darkness is all there is, that dangers completely surround us.
In that state of mind, we don't believe we deserve respite or that we can relax our guard. We are in a constant hypervigilant state carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders.
However, a reality consumed in totality by suffering, lies, threats, and dangers is a recipe for depression, anxiety, paranoia, burnout, helplessness and polarization.

It's a skewed vision of the world, actually, a vision that makes us forget there's still good in the world.
As we head towards the election in 2020, let's develop a resistance that fights darkness, suffering and hate without losing sight of the hope, love, and joy that are still out there, waiting patiently for us to come home.
What I'm suggesting is that we create a resistance that balances out darkness with light; a resistance that fights trump without getting sucked into his ugly, cynical, & corrupt worldview.

In fighting monsters, let us not look out through the eyes & minds of monsters.
We need to cultivate a resistance, a democracy, built on hope & love, and we need to begin to bring balance back into our lives.

How do we do go about doing that?

That could mean simple things, like not reading trump's tweets & instead reading something about human resilience.
It could mean engaging in planned or random acts of kindness.

It could mean taking time off from resisting to relax and enjoy the company of loved ones.

It also could mean not being consumed by impeachment 24/7.
Yes, trump deserves to be impeached and removed, but hyper-focusing on impeachment can be very corrosive, since it means focusing on trump constantly.

You do that long enough and trump can start to become the center of your world. And that's not very healthy, to say the least.
A trump centered reality is also a distortion of actual reality. It distracts us from the great work many resisters and Democrats are doing.

Did you know that the Dem House has passed 6 of 9 signature bills? Bills like the Equality Act, HR-1, and the Dream Act.
Have you lost sight of all the women and POC Democrats making their mark, shaking up Washington, and bringing about subtle but real change?

The fact that so many of the top presidential candidates are women and that they are kicking ass cannot be appreciated enough.
We need to balance our focus on the wrongs by focusing on all that is right, all that deserves to be honored and celebrated.

And I suggest that a balanced activism can create a more effective. resilient, and sustainable movement.
The need for a more balanced movement will become even more important as the resistance is shifting from just opposing tyranny to governance.

For the sake of our souls and our sanity, we can't just focus on trump & the GOP, and all the harms they are inflicting on us.
We must also focus on our victories & accomplishments, and never lose sight of our core values.

We need to balance our resistance fueled by outrage with a reconstruction fueled by our deepest aspirations.
