Hey I'm back! And it's time for another thread! This time we'll be talking about DNF reviews. I think I'll use an analogy in the form of yogurt. Are you ready? Let's begin. #WritingCommunity
I've seen many authors complain that if a reader did not finish a book, they have no right to complain about it. These authors say that because the reader didn't read it ALL the way through, their review means diddley squat. To that I say "HORSE HOCKEY"!
For example, I like yogurt, but not all kinds - so I try new brands to see if I like them. Let's say I bought a new brand and I took a bite and it was gross. Maybe I'd try a second bite just to be sure...
But after a few tastes, I'd know for sure I didn't like it. One thing I would NOT do is eat the full container of this yogurt I hated. Why would one do that?
So I might leave a review saying "gah this stuff is nasty and I don't care for it one bit". And no one would ever say "You're wrong, because I work for the yogurt company and I put together the tastes and you're hurting my feelings. Besides you didn't eat it all the way through."
You see? It's the same way with books. Readers have different tastes. If they start reading your book and dislike it, pressuring them to read the whole damn thing isn't going to make them like it. It's a waste of their time. There are other books to read - ones they would enjoy.
So for the love of god, please stop saying reviews are invalid because they didn't finish the book. There is NO ending to a book that will make a reader say "wow - I hated all of it but the last bit was so awesome I give it 5 stars!"
You wouldn't eat all of something you didn't like, you won't read all of something you didn't like and YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. End of story. Authors, please realize this. You're doing yourself no favors by insisting readers have to. You just look desperate. Thank you.
