One of my favorite part of working at UN Geneva offices as part of my sabbatical is seeing democracy in action: protests and demonstrations outside the gates. This morning it was a vocal & desperate group of #Uighur . 1/
I think they are demonstrating at the occasion of the #HRC41 meeting. The Chinese repression of the Muslim minority #Uighur is vast and horrific, yet many colleagues & countries still treat China as a normal collaboration and trading partner. 2/
None of this is ok. I criticize my home countries (USA, UK & Switzerland) for the harm they do, I won't be silent on China or anywhere else.
It was touching witnessing the dedication and courage of these protestors, standing up to one of the most powerful governments on Earth.4/
Their chants were very loud, could be heard inside UN compound, in a mix of languages, sometimes hard to understand: a sign of their migration paths.
"China Kinder Murder! China Frauen Murder!"
I'd be proud to call myself an ally of this group. 5/
Reminder that the persecution of #Uighur is driven by western Islamophobia too: if it weren't for a general agreement that Muslims are undesirable, Western govts would be much more tough on China. Imagine millions of Christians interned with no intervention? I can't either. End/
