1. One of the bitter fruits of White Supremacy is Tokenism.

Tokenism- The weaponization of a few people who belong to a specific ethnic group against others of same ethnic group; usually they’re treated as representatives of larger group despite having contrary views.
2. There are several pillars that hold up white supremacy and tokenism is one of the strongest. Tokenism allows racists to justify and/or excuse their racism by claiming to have “friends” and “supporters” that belong to the group they racialize & deem inferior.
3. [Side Note] because tokenism is such a powerful tool/benefit for the flourishing of white supremacy; white supremacists are easily triggered & angered when POC speak abt tokenism. They seek to silence any discussion on the topic b/c they know how valuable it is to their cause.
4. There are two components to tokenism. There’s the insidiousness of those who wield/weaponizing image bearers against others. The very reality of tokenism speaks to the depths of human depravity. The fact Christians themselves idolize power so much they’ll practice it is tragic
5. The other side of tokenism is the psychological brokenness those who e been tokenized can experience.

1. You have those who so desire white affirmation so much that they allow themselves to be weaponized against others. There identity/value is found in white affirmation. Sad.
6. PoC who require white affirmation in order to feel valued have profound psychological, emotional, & spiritual probs. They need care, healing, deliverance.

When such people are delivered, it can be a long painful process of restoration as trust in ethnic community is lost.
7. The other component to tokenism are the people who enjoy the power that comes with it. There are also those who thru being tokenized have tasted a kind of secondary power to white supremacy & they want/idolize said power. For them, being tokenized is a means of gaining power.
8. We often tell jokes abt those who say racist things & yet claim they’re not racist by virtue of few black people they know. We laugh at this common trope, but we often don’t pause & consider how insidious it is. On the other side of this defense are imgage bearers being used.
9. Listen. White Conservatives, White Progressives, and white liberals all tokenize. It is evil and wicked no matter who does it. Black people are not a monolith and a black person being referenced is not automatically tokenism. Don’t cry wolf with such a insidious practice...
10. The key to identifying Tokenism is not found simply in who one quotes; but it is in what voices they value. If the only voices they are willing to genuinely consider are those that reenforce their own bias, prejudicial assumptions, and/or bigotry; they are tokenizing.
11. Christians are to be those who value the Imagi dei in all and that acknowledgement accompanied with humility leads us to have a posture that is willing to consider others we disagree with. [racialized] Confirmation bias is not only prideful but it’s also ungodly. ✌🏽❤️
12. [side note] breaking all this down would require several lectures; but an important point worth mentioning is how minorities who desire to be tokenized gain power in churches. They typically push against white leaders enough to make them feel “rubbed” but never challenged...
13. Many white churches tokenize & don’t know it. They receive a minority who seems to be a good balance. Once trust is gained thru soft pushback, the minority will begin calling other more prophetic minorities radical; They see these minorities as potential obstacles to power.
