#NationalWritingDay and I'm actually finishing revisions on an oldie-but-goodie paper WHICH WILL BE SUBMITTED BEFORE MIDNIGHT! @lamb_wf @sakai_marco - yes that one.

Procrastination thoughts.
1) I love this goddamn job and research and the opportunity to mess around with data.
2) this paper should have been published, I dunno, 2015? I think? Yes, stuff happened. 🦀 and all that. But still. A lot of it is publishing-while-female. I'm old enough and promoted enough now to give extremely few fucks and just say it like it is.
Reviewers do not like women first authors to do anything slightly new. I've published slightly new (i.e. not incremental) stuff as first author and as an N'th author, and trust me that there is *always* pushback, but it's 3-4x worse as a woman first author.
I remember some reviews on this paper (it went into review in nice journals! it's a great result!) saying just really dismissive stuff, like that our indicator for food supply wasn't robust. 🤪🙄? Dude, it's the standard kcal/cap/day from FAO - if you'd read to the data section.
But that kind of dismissiveness is enough to get rejected, because jumpy editors just see "not robust" and hit the reject button. So here I am, still working on a super old paper, still fighting to get it published. It's worth it. I'm happy with my work and research and team
and have had lots of successes over the years. But I see colleagues publish less rigorous stuff in nice journals. I was never going to be super prolific, I'm too lazy and self-doubting for that. But I could have done so much more without this extraordinary level of pushback ...
against women authors.

Anyway, reviewers out there, don't be dicks to women. Women can make discoveries too. We're not fucking stupid.

And editors, double blind would be progress. Do it. As a rule, not an option. End/
