A White House official speaking on background gave us (travel team) a short briefing about a G20 session on the digital economy.
2/ The official said that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe opened the session "with a call for unity, and for countries around the world to really think creatively about the challenges that we're facing with respect to the digital economy, as well as the opportunities.”
3/ This applied especially “in the areas of emerging technologies.”
The issues range from “skills and workforce to preventing things like terrorist content from proliferating online.”
Several leaders spoke, including those from the UK, Germany and Brazil, according to the official.
The official said that “one of the big outcomes of the #G20 finance ministers today” involves ongoing #OECD negotiations to “fix the international consensus on taxation,”…
5/ …including “countries considering unilateral digital services taxes, which really undermine that negotiation.”
The official said that the ministers agreed on “the need for a multilateral solution and the need for all countries to participate in that.”
“We were really encouraged about the call for free flow of data, and for unity at the #OECD negotiations,” the official said.
Reaching consensus on international taxation is “a huge priority for the United States, so we were very encouraged to hear that there was quite a bit of support for that,” the official said.
Free data flow and a commitment to "high-standard rules for e-commerce" is a special priority for Japan, meanwhile, which sees it as “a challenge for growth.”
9/ Abe on Friday declared data flow issues to be the "Osaka Track."
“Ultimately it was clear from the conversations among the leaders that this is something that everyone is thinking about very strategically and seriously,” the official said. - Travel Team Osaka #KAG
