An ode to #MedEve, and with huge thanks to @karanpdesai for apparently coining the term.
Care to join me for some summer reflections and musings? 1/x
@karanpdesai today is also my birthday, so it coincides with the end of the academic year annually
(I was also born in a teaching hospital, and grew up being told stories of the change over, so I was aware there was something special about 6/30-7/1 before I even chose to enter medicine 2/x
@karanpdesai I tend to be moody, broody, reflective before my birthday each year, which in years past has been magnified by trying to wrap up the end of the academic year, settle out FTE (ie actually work a true 1.0 not more...).
it's been "blamed" on my zodiac sign... 🤷‍♀️ 3/x
@karanpdesai but you know what? this year? I don't feel moody, broody. I've definitely been reflecting--personally and professionally--and my goodness, what a year! There have been plenty of ups and downs, but this is the most grounded and positive I've felt on my birthday in years 4/x
@karanpdesai I honestly think the connections, friendships, and collaborations that have sprung from #medtwitter have had no small part in this--professionally AND personally! 5/x
@karanpdesai the Dean of OHSU's SOM, Dr. Sharon Anderson, gives a professional development talk that includes the advise--once a year, "unpack your backpack"

There have also been awesome conversations on #medtwitter in recent days about updating your CV OFTEN as a self-reflection tool 6/x
@karanpdesai so what did I unpack and appreciate this year?
all the conversations and connections about humility, curiosity, saying "no" and learning to say "I don't know", the humanism--resilience, "balance", wellness, boundaries, vulnerability, and stepping into tension 7/x
@karanpdesai about amplifying each other and those junior to us, the conversations about mentorship v sponsorship, and so many new exciting ways to feel engaged by channeling creative energies into the novel and non-traditional! 8/x
@karanpdesai many many chances to "make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold" (Girl Scout song!)
I know so many people I didn't know a year ago, and I know many people much better than I did a year ago 9/x
@karanpdesai notice how I am NOT measuring this past year in the number of publications, conference talks, blah blah blah--those opportunities have been amazing, but it was the human capital and connections that made them possible and resulted from them that really matter more 10/x
@karanpdesai so here's to another year of connections--with our peers, our colleagues, our students, our patients, and our friends and family 11/x
@karanpdesai thus, rather than the backwards facing statement "my birthday is the last day of the academic year", from henceforth I think I will prefer to think of my birthday as coinciding with #MedEve! 12/x
@karanpdesai so, make those forwards facing #MedEve resolutions, share those #TipsForNewDocs, and have an incredible July with your learners
whatever academic year 2019-2020 has in store for you, I hope it is engaging, exciting, and full of support and connection through the downs and ups FIN
