This is a truly terrible take that I know is widely shared. A thread...

1) Blaming influencers for influx of travelers is absurd. Travel has always existed in the realm of wish fulfillment. The fact that more people are traveling is a sign that more people are upwardly mobile.
2) Your "I want fewer people in Zion" think pieces are the same as #MAGA noise -- the toxic thinking of "it was better back before YOU showed up."

It's racist, ageist, ableist, gendered, & xenophobic.

Don't see it? Research the largest growing segments in the travel industry.
3) This exact same piece was written about the Lonely Planet in 1999. By me.

It's not about the platform, it's about the fact that many travelers aren't intrepid. They glom onto the same places, which people of influence -- writers, models, etc -- tell them are cool.
4) Cool places are cool. Stop telling people not to go to them. YOU went, you hypocrite.

They want to see the planet they live on.

Just like you.

"Oh, you went DECADES ago?" Well, influencers were infants back then. How dare they not have gone in 2002!?
5) We live in a planet of 7.5B and our max carrying capacity is 9.5B.

STOP GETTING MAD AT PEOPLE FOR BEING WHERE YOU ARE. THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE.
6) The idea that over tourism is all the fault of #TraveInfluencers is beyond the pale in its wrongness. Mark Twain reported on over tourism of the holy cites by Americans in 'The Innocents Abroad' -- 1869.

Also... you can't just call everyone with an iPhone an influencer.
7) NONE OF THIS PRECLUDES all travelers from the requirement to be respectful to:

-the land
-its traditional (Indigenous) owners
-other travelers

But conflating "respect" with influencer blame is silly, petty, and wrong.
Lastly... @MatadorNetwork, @UPROXX, @TravelLeisure, @AFARmedia, @Thrillist... they're all influencers.

All of them. On a much bigger scale than most people on Instagram.
