In April, I hiked into Shasta-Trinity National Forest with a small group of ecologists and law enforcement, including a National Guard team specializing in weapons of mass destruction. 1/7 playboy.com/read/protectin…
We were going to a trespass grow, an illegal marijuana grow on public land, run by drug trafficking organizations. We weren’t really there because of cannabis, though.
We were there because of carbofuran, an insecticide so powerful that a thimble can kill a 600 pound lion. 2/7
Nine bottles of carbofuran were found at this one grow alone. Like sarin and Vx, carbofuran is a nerve agent, which is why the WMD team was with us. Carbofuran is effectively banned in the United States (though a primary manufacturer of the insecticide is in Philadelphia). 3/7
Growers use bottles of the stuff to keep animals away from their marijuana crop. It’ll kill any animal that comes into contact with it and poisons the soil, water and plants around it. What’s more, growers have started using carbofuran defensively against law enforcement. 4/7
Several months before I joined these folks, a forest service agent lost his sight from carbofuran exposure. Similar incidents have occurred over the last several years, and they’re increasing. 5/7
Carbofuran and similar pesticides cause the most immediate environmental and human hazards, but, as you’ll see, hundreds of pounds of trash are left at these sites as well. 6/7
Anyhoo, if you want to read about what amounts to chemical weapons hidden throughout CA’s public land & who’s getting hurt by them, I hope you’ll read (and share) this piece I wrote for Playboy about it. 7/7 #cannabis #carbofuran
Bonus tweet: please enjoy this picture of me in a protective suit after hiking out of the trespass grow, in case I had been exposed to carbofuran.
