As the US press from Breitbart to CNN whips up fear of anarchists + 'antifa,' in the UK, the press is full of glowing reviews + interviews of a new documentary celebrating the life of Anna Campbell, a young anarchist + antifascist who joined the #YPG to fight #ISIS + was killed.
In Spain, where anarchism flourished during the revolt against Franco's fascism + played a huge role in resisting the regime + still remains a mass movement today, the media cannot use the term anarchist or antifascist as an insult, simply because so many people identify with it.
In response, the media in Spain simply invented a new term to call the movement, especially the elements tied to squatting and the black bloc: "anti-systema."
Anarchism also has a long history of being attacked by both the capitalist press + so-called socialist States. When Emma Goldman + others were deported to Russia during the Red Scare, Lenin even refused to admit that the Soviet State had anarchist prisoners in its jails.
In Hungry in 1956, an uprising kicked off after a student protester was killed by troops, leading to a wave of workers' councils + militias forming as the State fell + people burned Lenin's books in the street. Soviet officials complained workers were "infected with anarchism."
During Ferguson and other anti-police rebellions, local police often tried to blame the riots on "out of town anarchists," in an effort to dived those fighting in the streets in a way that mirrored the police and media talk of "outside agitators" in the civil rights movement.
As a guest said on the IGD podcast, the role of the media is to divorce social movements from their potential base of support within the wider public. itsgoingdown.org/job-media-divo…
It's also important to point out that such media demonizing often doesn't work - generally social movements grow as people push back + fight against State repression. People join in riots, strikes, and occupations - even if upper-middle class liberals in editorials denounce them.
