1. Morning folks from the village. Many asked about my goat housing. So this is the main goat pen. It has 2 compartments & a big store room. The pregnant females & those with kids stay on 1 side & the non pregnant females stay on the other side. The structure is 40m X 9meters.
2. This is the second goat pen building for the ones that I would have weaned off their mothers. The breeding boer goat males would be ready for sale at 6 months. We sale them at US$500 each. There is a massive shortage in the country at the moment because there are fewer breeders
3. #Water I use a 1.5 hp solar pump which pumps into a 5000 liter tank & then use gravity to distribute to the paddocks which have water pans for the goats. It is advisable to give them clean water to avoid liver fluke disease. I bought my borehole kit for R3000 in SA from DAB.
4. It is important to create store rooms in your goat pens. This is where I keep supplementary feed, medicines & vaccines, reading material on goats for my stockman to go through when a goat is sick & he needs to understand what is going on and more importantly, hay for the goats
5. Security is important for peace of mind. I have solar powered flood lights & strong lockable gates & the goat pens are alarmed, use solar. In these hard times folks are trying anything to survive so don’t leave your goats exposed to theft.Jamaicans call it, security for surety
6. Hygiene is also important for the avoidances of diseases & infections. I have drive & walk through pans which we put water mixed with copper sulphate. When a truck is delivering hay from a farm, it brings with it infections from that farm. Folks do the same too. So do that!
7. It is important to concretize your boundary fence to avoid holes being created by goats or people. The interior short fence for paddocks can remain without concrete but the exterior must be secured money permitting! Goat breeding is a passion & business so invest what you can
8. When you do it well folks will notice. I had the Angolan Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pedro Hendrick Vaal Neto come to have a look at the project. Once we implement Political Reforms we will create markets beyond our borders. If each village has 1 such project, that is millions of $
