The #Bonalu celebrations kicked off in Hyderabad today with the Golkonda Jagadamba Mahankali Jatara. #Bonalu is specific to Telangana and is dedicated to the worship of Shakti in the form of various Grama Devatas.
Though celebrated all over Telangana, it is the #Bonalu celebrations in Hyderabad that are really well known. It is celebrated in the month of Ashada, usually in last week of June or first week of July.
#Bonalu is more a corruption of the word Bhojanalu( meals or a feast) where devotees offer cooked food to the Ammavaru. The women carry earthen pots containing rice cooked with jaggery, milk, decorated with Neem,Haldi
Along with the Bonam, women also offer Haldi, Kumkum, Saree, Bangles to Ammavaru . The Bonam here is the pot containing the cooked food, primarily mix of jaggery, rice, milk. It is more a Thanksgiving ritual

#Bonalu festivities is believed to have started in Secunderabad during 1813, after a deadly plague broke out in the city. Hindu Soldiers of the Hyderabad Battalion were then in Ujjain, and they prayed to Mahankali to save city from plague.
The soldiers prayed to Ujjain Mahankali, and promised to build a temple to her in Secunderabad if the plague went away .The plague was curbed, and in gratitude the soldiers built the temple for Ujjain Mahankali there.

This Ujjain Mahankali Temple is one of the older ones in Secunderabad, where #Bonalu is a grand affair. Incidentally the two major festivals of Telangana, #Bonalu and #Bathukamma are both women oriented, stressing importance of Shakti. #WalkToTemple
#Bonalu is also believed to be the time when the Ammavaru, comes to her parent's home in Ashadha month from Kailasa, and is worshiped. The celebrations is actually spread out in various parts of Hyderabad, Secunderabad , some though are very famous.
Basically Ammavaru is worshiped in different forms like Pedamma, Mysamma, Mahankali, Yellama during #Bonalu. In Hyderabad you have temples dedicated to village deities in every major neighborhood, some very famous.
The #Bonalu celebrations start with the Jatara at the Jagadamba Mahankali Ammavaru Temple in Golkonda fort. The celebrations are a total riot of color, dance, festivity and fun here.

On 2nd Sunday of Ashada, #Bonalu is observed at Yellama Temple, Balkampet and Ujjain Mahankali Temple, Secunderabad. Yellama Temple in Balkampet is one of the well known ones, especially it's #Bonalu celebrations #WalkToTemple
Yellamma Temple in Balkampet is dedicated to Renuka Yellamma, the mother of Parashuram. It is believed that when Parashuram, set out to kill her, on the orders of his father, she tried to hide from him in a well here. She is considered a very powerful deity. #WalkToTemple
On 3rd Sunday, #Bonalu is observed at Katte Maisama Pochamma Temple, Chilakalguda, and also at the Lal Darwaza Mahankali Temple in Old City. #WalkToTemple
Akkanna Madanna Temple at Shah Ali Banda is also famous for #Bonalu .Akkanna and Madanna were two Hindu nobles in the court of Tana Shah, the last Qutub Shahi Sultan, and they built the temple at Shalibanda. They were also the uncles of Bhadrachala Ramadasu.

Women celebrate #Bonalu every year in large numbers carrying the pots on their heads. Some women go into a trance during #Bonalu, believed to be possesed by spirit of Ammavaru
One more feature of #Bonalu are the Pothurajus who are believed to the Ammavaru's brothers and dance in procession. Another feature of #Bonalu is the Rangam, a woman who acts as an Oracle of sorts, foretelling the future
