THREAD: In the summer of 2016, Russian intelligence agents secretly planted a fake report claiming that DNC staffer Seth Rich was gunned down by a squad of assassins working for Hillary Clinton yhoo.it/32iCMdG via @Isikoff
This gave rise to a notorious conspiracy theory that captivated conservative activists and was later promoted from inside President Trump’s White House yhoo.it/32iCMdG
Russia’s foreign intelligence service, known as the SVR, first circulated a phony “bulletin” — disguised to read as a real intelligence report —about the alleged murder of the former DNC staffer, according to the U.S. federal prosecutor who was in charge of the Rich case
The purported details in the SVR account seemed improbable on their face: that Rich, a data director in the DNC’s voter protection division, was on his way to alert the FBI to corrupt dealings by Clinton when he was slain in the early hours of a Sunday morning by HRC's hit squad
Yet in a graphic example of how fake news infects the internet, those precise details popped up the same day on an obscure website, whatdoesitmean.com, that is a frequent vehicle for Russian propaganda yhoo.it/32iCMdG
The website’s article, which attributed its claims to “Russian intelligence,” was the first known instance of Rich’s murder being publicly linked to a political conspiracy yhoo.it/32iCMdG
“To me, having a foreign intelligence agency set up one of my decedents with lies and planting false stories, to me that’s pretty outrageous,” said @SinesDeborah, the former assistant U.S. attorney in charge of the Rich case until her retirement last year yhoo.it/32iCMdG
The previously unreported role of Russian intelligence in creating and fostering one of the most insidious conspiracy theories to arise out of the 2016 election is disclosed in 'Conspiracyland," a six-part podcast series.
EXCLUSIVE: On Dec. 20, 2020, a 21-year-old intelligence analyst stumbled upon the blueprint of a plot to storm the Capitol, execute members of Congress and cops to prevent the certification of electoral votes to make Joe Biden the next U.S. president. yhoo.it/3j3eWzt
Over the next 16 days, the Department of Homeland Security, the office created in the wake of 9/11 to prevent another catastrophic attack, failed to share its intelligence ahead of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attack. yhoo.it/3uO4SNK
Over those 16 days, those inside DHS saw the plot unfold in excruciating detail. They watched as maps of the Capitol access tunnels were circulated online. They saw posts by people who said they were willing, and expecting, to die for their cause. yhoo.it/3uO4SNK

Trump’s interest in negotiating better prices for the government made it seem like Assad’s work would get White House attention... yhoo.it/2o9z2Mh
Yet within two years of Trump’s entrance into the White House, Assad would find himself removed from his job, and his efforts to save money and recover hundreds of millions of dollars in potentially fraudulent spending tabled yhoo.it/2o9z2Mh
EXCLUSIVE: Document reveals the FBI is tracking border protest groups as extremist organizations yhoo.it/2ZNKVUY via @janawinter, @hunterw
@janawinter@hunterw The FBI has gathered intelligence from people with “direct access” to the organizations and is monitoring their social media, according to the document, called an “external intelligence note,” that was obtained by Yahoo News yhoo.it/2ZNKVUY
The note said there are indications these groups are “increasingly arming themselves and using lethal force to further their goals.”
However, almost all of the evidence cited in the report involved nonviolent protest activity. yhoo.it/2ZNKVUY
For the first time, the FBI has identified fringe conspiracy theories as a domestic terrorist threat, according to a previously unpublicized document obtained by Yahoo News yhoo.it/2Zo7uAh via @janawinter (1/15)
The FBI intelligence bulletin from the bureau’s Phoenix field office, dated May 30, 2019, describes “conspiracy theory-driven domestic extremists,” as a growing threat, and notes that it is the first such report to do so yhoo.it/2Zo7uAh (2/15)
It lists a number of arrests related to violent incidents motivated by fringe beliefs
The doc specifically mentions QAnon, a shadowy network that believes in a deep state conspiracy against Trump... yhoo.it/2Zo7uAh (3/15) (Leah Millis/Reuters)
