Today, I’m the proud recipient of my very first #VETO!

This bill was my effort to address unconstitutional and inhumane problems in our county jails, at -no- cost to taxpayers.

Here’s how HB349 works:
——
You in jail?

Want a second opinion on a medical matter?
Superintendent said no?

Pay for it yourself, and we’re all set.

——
…Groundbreaking stuff, right?

A few years ago, a woman delivered a stillborn child on the FLOOR of the Hillsborough County Jail. That infant DIED because the mother, in jail PRE-TRIAL, was arbitrarily denied medical care.
The people who let this happen still have their jobs. My taxes pay their bills. My taxes also paid for the $40,000 lawsuit the mother won, which if you ask me is not enough to replace a child you had named and were expecting to meet in less than a month.
We can’t do anything to bring Baby Isabelle back, but we can do something to prevent it from ever happening again. But the Governor vetoed this bill.

The TL;DR version of @GovChrisSununu’s veto message is:
“I don’t understand the finer details of this issue, and I refuse to research it. Instead, I’m going to rely upon the opinion of the Superintendent of Hillsborough County Jail, which has paid out more in law suits than any jail in our state.”
I’m grateful for folks like @hennessey4nh, @EdoftheNotch, @susanalmy14, @tesha4, @realcoleriel, and @katemurrayfornh — who all cosponsored with me — and @ACLU_NH’s @jeanne_hruska, who worked so hard to see this bill pass. (Very special shout-out to @rnv1978!)
It’s a real shame that we still can’t make progress on this, simply because a hyper-partisan man is too overwhelmed with his job to look more deeply into an issue.

I just hope I get another chance to address this problem in the future.
