The move from a broadcast and print-based subscription model of news to one in which endless blogs and online news sources need a constant river of new content signals a switch from a reflective editorial model rooted in discovering and reporting the truth to a reactive content
hunting model which seeks an emotional response. The financial incentives are no longer found in delivering accurate reporting but in gaining clicks. Thus a highly emotive, reactive media landscape is created in which the money is to be made in creating emotive content which
bypasses our faculties of reason and activates our limbic system. This creates a never-ending stream of content which centers around concepts of pleasure, shame, controversy, tribalism, hate, disgust, sex, curiosity, & identity-affirmation. The subscription-based/broadcast model
symbiotically worked with a model of political centrism. Reaching a height during the Blair/Clinton/Schröder Third way moment in which the goal was to reach the mass with a message of compromise, and in which the political choice seemed to be reduced to a choice between
left and right-wing flavours of neoliberal technocratic rock n roll boomers. Now however the new media environment, hungry for viral content, is ripe for exploitation by savvy twittercrats of the further reaches of the left and right who understand that polarising tribal content
cuts through and builds huge platforms in this environment. The progressive-leaning controllers of the new platforms abhor this development, yet are bewitched by the sheer volumes of clicks such political rhetoric gains.
And the political choice now seems to be heading to a depressing future in which the choice is between leftwing anti-semites and rightwing anti-immigrants. However, this future will only remain possible while we continue to allow ourselves to be exploited. We can resist.
If we are more invested in an online culture war flashpoint over a marvel movie than we are in the massacre that occurred in Papau New Guinea last week that was unreported because it contained no online virality, then we know we are addicted. We don't have to click.
Don't let your God-given sense of justice be exploited for others gain. The new model only works while we allow our limbic system to be hijacked. Stop. before you click. Think, Reflect. Pray. Walk away, Come back. Prayerfully consider away from the echo-chamber where your
attention and energy best needs to be directed to partner in the building of a better world.
Addendum:
"Outrage is profitable. Most of the outrage I’ve seen in the online world – I would guess 80% – someone’s faking it for profit.”
