🚨 We are granting early access to our India local data series: 500k villages, 8000 towns, 4000 constituencies. 25 years of admin data on firms, public goods, consumption, labor, elections, demographics, forest cover, etc.. All hyperlocal. Thread w/@thesamasher and @tobylunt 👇
Track outcomes over 25 years at the village and town level, with constant geographic units. Indian census units change over time and across surveys. Our units stay the same and always will. 2/N
There are over 200 time series economic fields that can be matched to legislative assembly constituencies and election results. (Pol econ and polisci types take note! This used to be pretty hard.) 3/N
The employment series covers all firms in India, including informal, services, state-owned. The consumption data covers almost every village. There are keys that make it easy to seamlessly link other Indian data across time. 4/N
The data and site go live in August, but you can DM or email us for early access. You just need to let us know when something looks wrong or unclear, so we can fix it. 5/N
We want to create a backbone for local and administrative data in India. By harmonizing location definitions, the backbone makes it easy for other India researchers to share data as well. 6/N
This is more than a byproduct of our research -- we’ve spent a huge amount of time improving this for the public in the hope that a lot of people in research, policymaking, and civil society will find it useful. 7/N
