Whether we’re talking about some sort of alternative arrangements for @BorderIrish or just coping with increased no of #customs declarations after #Brexit (especially under #nodeal ) it all comes down to customs systems /1

Some like the #AAC claim that it would be sufficient to use existing systems and processes to solve the NI border. All you would need is to adapt them slightly. Which doesn't seem to be a big deal (I'm not going to go into detail here on the AAC plan-just focusing on systems) /2
I've mentioned this several times before - an update from UK's current customs IT system CHIEF to the new version CDS started years back, before the referendum. The article provides an update on the progress. TL:DR it's not ready for Brexit /3
CHIEF had to be modified to be able to handle the number of customs declaration post-Brexit. Making Tax Digital programme also not going that well /4
"The Infrastructure Projects Authority's annual report today flagged nine government ICT projects as amber/red, meaning successful delivery is in doubt, with major risks or issues apparent in a number of key areas" /5
So while we keep talking about transit, moving customs formalities inland etc even the basic Gov IT projects take years and keep failing. The chances of getting anything new in place for 31 Oct or amending any of the existing systems sufficiently are 0 /6
Which means that finding an alternative arrangement is also very unlikely. There is a massive discrepancy between what we think we can technically do and how long it will take and reality /7
Any estimates of how long it would take to adapt even existing systems to the new scenario should be at least doubled. Based simply on the evidence from recent tax related UK projects /end
