Walking about #Castlemaine today. What a glorious beautiful winter’s day.
Castlemaine Post Office. There’s a bit of life in the streets. Going to explore the town and head into the Saturday morning markets and see what town folk do on weekends.
“The art of deriving comfort, well being and energy from wild landscapes and convivial interiors” - love this. Alas I don’t have wild landscapes in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne so that’s why I love travelling and experiencing these instead. Hence why I’m in Castlemaine.
Tonight’s program....
Bliss. The Castlemaine Library is in an Art Gallery and Tourist Information Centre in an old building - really delightful.
And we always find some yarny goodness wherever we go.
What’s a diving “belle” doing in Castlemaine? Bell. Belle. Get it? Never mind. Okay. We found the story. It was built in the town so it was used to locate the gold bullion that sank in RMS Niagara during WW2.
Charming Castlemaine. Charming.
Lake Joanna established in 1860 in the Botanical Gardens which has a collection of 850 trees which is the most extensive in a regional botanical collection.
Wandering around the Elphinstone cemetery - which surprisingly was quite sparse. We wondered about the question of “belonging” and where people choose to be buried. This tombstone was from 1856. (They may have cone here for the gold rush at the time?)
Driving home we see these massive kangaroos! They’re giants!!!
Flicking through an atlas of the British Isles and I’m pointing to my favourite place on earth....yes, the Isle of Skye.
How great is this! It’s from this huge book called The Readers Digest Complete Atlas of the British Isles. You can get lost in this!
These things are making some weird hooting noises outside the door. They’re staring at me...I think they want to come inside. Shoo!
Ready for Saturday night at the Castlemaine International Documentary Film Festival. Just told by someone that “locals wouldn’t do that (take selfies)”. Okay so they know we aren’t from here....but we are propping up the Australian film industry don’t you know.
So we are in the Theatre Royal with friends. It’s the longest running cinema in Australia. The band is getting ready. After the French film Le Grande Bal, there’s going to be a dance in the cinema hall with a real live band. Scoping out who I’m going to dance with now....
I could so live in Castlemaine. #justsaying
The dancing tonight at the film festival was fantastic!!! We did what the French do at Le Grande Bal festival. It was WONDERFUL!! Thank you #Castlemaine
This is so much fun...
The night ended with a quick visit to the loo where I was confronted with this...
