Here We Go Again: Another Major Error Found in a Peer-Reviewed Paper Used to Support the IAAF Regulations of Female Athletes rogerpielkejr.com/2019/07/20/her…
Last month at the French Embassy in DC, Stéphane Bermon of the IAAF relied heavily on a paper by Clark et al. to argue that 46 XY DSD individuals were "biological males" Here is a picture of Bermon citing Clark et al. in DC.
The figure shown by Meron immediately caught my attention because it included a lonely, naked data point under 5ARD2 XY -- a point with no associated distribution. That is odd, I thought.
So I decided to go back to the orginal literature and data reviewed by Clark etal. and replicate their analysis myself.
And ... whoa nellie! ... what did I find but a bunch of sloppy errors and one HUGE error that was fatal to Clark et al.
I immediately emailed Clark et al. to notify them of the error, I also contacted the journal editor & I submitted a professional correspondence.
The correspondence has been rejected & I'm told a correction is coming in the journal. I haven't see it.
But here is what the Clark et al. figure looks like with the proper distribution added in (the heavier dashed line).
It completely undercuts the argument of no overlap between 46 XY 5ARD2 and "healthy" males/females.
Odd it was neglected, but now I've fixed it⬇️
You can read Clark et al. here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
You can read my rejected correspondence at the bottom of this post: rogerpielkejr.com/2019/07/20/her…
Errors happen in science (& an awful lot of them seem to occur in science related to IAAF regulations), that is normal.
What matters is what we do once errors are found.
I await seeing the actions by Clark et al. & the editor of Clinical Endocrinology. I hope for the best.
