I'm not always a good person.

I can be I can be petty, cruel, vindictive, short-tempered, angry, bitter, grumpy and sometimes even pretty bigoted, despite bigotry being a thing I fight against a lot.

I'm not always my best self.
And I used to say "my friends are the best part of me," because I have a lot of friends whose guidance and support helped me get a handle on my worst impulses.

But as heartwarming as that sentiment might seem, thinking that way is actually really self-destructive.
If you're relying on your friends to be your source of moral fortitude, it cuts you off from the idea of exercising your own personal moral agency.

If you rely on an external source of morality to be a good person, you aren't a good person. Someone else is being good for you.
Henceforth, I will no longer claim that my friends are the best part of me.

My friends aren't me. They can't live my life for me.

But my friends are the ones who can HELP ME FIND the best parts of me, in times when I can't see them myself.
