Very good article! I wanted to highlight one piece of skewed info coming from an "industry source" (short thread ahead)

WME threatened to 'blow up' the 'Good Doctor' deal over packaging fees, showrunner says latimes.com/entertainment-…
Package fees for an hour broadcast drama are often quite a bit higher than 30K. 50-75 is probably an average range.

On ODAAT the package fee STARTED at 30K and went up every season. And we're a much lower-budgeted 1/2 hr streaming show.

So "no more than 30K" is largely bullshit
The reason "industry source" seeks to minimize the $$$ is to pretend that we writers are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Problem with this argument is, if packaging fees are too small to care about, why do the agencies really really really really really care about them?
That brings us to "industry source's" next point, "the money's just going to go back to the studio." This is a real self-serving defeatist trope, and here's why:
First of all, the money isn't in writers' pockets NOW. The worst-case scenario is literally the status quo.

Then of course agents pretend they'd be powerless to get the money back from the studio for writers, which is obviously untrue because THEY ALREADY GOT IT FOR THEMSELVES
Absent packaging, agents will need to advocate for their clients and put pressure on the studios in the form of "hey we all know we just gave 30-75K an ep back to you, so I need my ESE to get some of that." Or my CoEP or my SW etc. This is not hard to understand. But also...
...Showrunners need to play a part too. I have already had convos w/my studio re: if I don't package, I need to see that $$$ going into my show. We must keep the studios honest and insist they take that packaging fee line item and move it into the writers budget.
I am of course not saying this will have an immediate one-to-one effect. But agents and writers working TOGETHER instead of "KIND OF together alongside an entirely separate income stream that's WAY more important than getting you a higher quote" seems like how it's supposed to be
Thank you for reading the rantings of an old man who needs his soup
