"Twelve Tips for Tweeting as a Residency Program"

@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom The piece is in the online journal @MedEdPublish, & we really appreciate the reads. Because it is open-access, I won't regurgitate the entire piece, but I will share and sprinkle additional explanations on highlights 2/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish the "12 Tips" piece chronicle our journey to create @OHSUIMRes for the @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the reflections, musings, advise for others thinking about a programmatic account for internal medicine and non-IM residency/fellowship programs 3/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @OHSUIMRes turned 4years old on July 14th. it's creation was heavily inspired by @ACPinternists #SoMe blitz at the 2015 meeting, which celebrated #ACP100yrs. I had joined #medtwitter (HT @DRsonosRD) 2-3 months prior, so was attempting #meetingtweeting for the first time 4/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD by following the hashtag, I saw many individuals sharing highlights of residents and student posters (including some residency programs) then started chatting w @PDX_Tom (also in attendance)--"why can't we do the same thing??"
a seed was planted!
5/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD The account was created 2.5 months later! We started slow and tested waters, but quickly realized #medtwitter has its own learning curve, and that "aha" moments solidified use of the account, providing positive (& sometimes negative) reinforcement for what tweets had impact 6/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD reflections, esp at the 1 year mark, were important for further maturing use of the account, honing goals, and communicating value/impact to stakeholders like PD @DesaisSima and Dept of Medicine leadership. It took a 5W/1H approach! 7/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD for example, we realized that #medtwitter unexpectedly:
❇️let us celebrate pride in residents & their accomplishments
❇️share day in the life/program culture
❇️connect with a much larger IM community incl other residency programs
it was FAR more than just tweeting articles 8/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD THEN, we realized we needed to pursue #medtwitter scholarship, to further reflect & disseminate our learnings. It started as local posters, including NW @SocietyGIM and the OHSU Symposium for Educational Excellence
(ps, the poster includes 15 "rules") 9/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM then after the abstract being declined on the first try but strengthened the next year, we presented at #aimw18, with lots of encouragement from @AAIMOnline to seek any help to get it to publication...so here we are! 10/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline btw, the poster has twitter metrics/analytics & other quantitative data, but the heart & soul of it was the narrative TIMELINE chronicling highlights & "aha" moments (tweet screengrabs) of the account's first 15 months 11/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline so, the tips!
1⃣tweet early, tweet often-lurk for a little (as @EMARIANOMD says, start with observation!-and yes, that is cited in the paper!), but this is a learning curve. get tweeting!
2⃣learn basic twitter vocabulary & how to tweet 12/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline @EMARIANOMD 3⃣celebrate and engage your residents. I can't say this loudly enough, so it gets its own tweet
so many incredible authors cited in the Tip re how #medtwitter amplifies/supports--including @MotherinMed @Kind4Kids @SashaShillcutt @JulieSilverMD @CabreraERDR @TChanMD @Doctor_V 13/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline @EMARIANOMD @MotherinMed @Kind4Kids @SashaShillcutt @JulieSilverMD @CabreraERDR @TChanMD @Doctor_V 4⃣tweet on a calendar of recurring/special program events
5⃣engage your institution's faculty & fellows! have them help you amplify residents as you teach "the art of the humblebrag"
6⃣define community creatively-programmatic, institutional, regional, (inter)national
14/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline @EMARIANOMD @MotherinMed @Kind4Kids @SashaShillcutt @JulieSilverMD @CabreraERDR @TChanMD @Doctor_V 7⃣prioritize goal medical content including "hot" topics
8⃣be mindful about the "small" moments, including landscapes & chance encounters. "love where you work and the work you do there".
and ALWAYS tweet a photo with the #pettherapy animals when you run into them 15/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline @EMARIANOMD @MotherinMed @Kind4Kids @SashaShillcutt @JulieSilverMD @CabreraERDR @TChanMD @Doctor_V 9⃣use twitter analytics. you can't grow without feedback
🔟be professional
again
BE PROFESSIONAL. < 5 second rule applies BIG. TIME.
1⃣1⃣toot your own horn. show off your program. it's not narcissism, I promise--that would be writing your own wikipedia page (@VPrasadMDMPH)
16/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline @EMARIANOMD @MotherinMed @Kind4Kids @SashaShillcutt @JulieSilverMD @CabreraERDR @TChanMD @Doctor_V @VPrasadMDMPH 1⃣2⃣don't forget to have fun! #medtwitter has created a remarkable community centered on learning, advocacy, connections, humility--and also just enjoying our passion for being physicians/physicians in training. Celebrate the joy & the connections... 17/x
@DesaisSima @PDX_Tom @MedEdPublish @OHSUIMRes @OHSUSOM @OHSUNews @ACPinternists @DRsonosRD @SocietyGIM @AAIMOnline @EMARIANOMD @MotherinMed @Kind4Kids @SashaShillcutt @JulieSilverMD @CabreraERDR @TChanMD @Doctor_V @VPrasadMDMPH Huge thanks to all who supported this project, & @OHSUPulmCCM @mgdrake @kelsi_manley Kevin Ducey for the copyright permissions for the included tweets. I learned something new about how to publish tweet screengrabs (HT @MedEdPublish for the excellent editorial experience) 18/x
