Some thoughts on the just announced @Facebook / FTC $5B order:

Press release: ftc.gov/news-events/pr…
Order: ftc.gov/system/files/d… (pdf)
1) FTC/Facebook order name Zuckerberg directly, requiring him (or his replacement) to certify @Facebook’s Privacy Program to the commission.
@facebook 2) Order covers behavior well beyond #CambridgeAnalytica to include:
- whitelisted apps/devices
- using 2FA phone numbers for advertising
- deceptive facial recognition controls
- the 'view as' token breach (guess?)
- storing plaintext passwords
- harvesting email contacts
@facebook 3) Here's a list of some other potential Section 5 violations by
@Facebook besides #CambridgeAnalytica since 2018.

The ones highlighted in blue seem to be the ones FTC directly addresses in the order/injunctions:

Unsure about the rest (still reading)
@facebook 4) Order adds a provision that @TheJusticeDept will also maintain oversight and receive copies of the audits, certifications, etc.

This might address concerns surrounding the ‘Woefully Inadequacy' of assessment review that @megangrA & others have raised gizmodo.com/ftc-privacy-au…
@facebook @TheJusticeDept @megangrA 5) The requirement for an 'Independent Privacy Committee' to oversee the Privacy Program & assessor is also new, and might be designed to address (valid) concerns that the execs at @Facebook don't really prioritize privacy.

Will be very eager to see who they appoint.
@facebook @TheJusticeDept @megangrA 6) *HOLY CRAP*: the FTC settlement indemnifies @Facebook for "any and all claims prior to June 12, 2019"

No wonder FB is willing to pay $5B
(Also not a surprise that it was a 3-2 vote)

Only a subset of the potential FTC violations reported since 2018 are covered (see the list)
