Got to vent to Dad-snazzio about the trial and he called the whole fucking tragic fiasco - this trial and criminal court proceedings generally - a “legitimation process” to make people feel better about fucked up outcomes. And I feel less crazy as I often do after these calls.
I know I say this all the time and I’m sorry but I THINK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME: what happens in courtrooms is so disconnected from any of the things it would make sense for you to think is the actual point of their existence.
Nothing about that trial was about finding out the truth of whether Keith Davis Jr. was the person who killed Kevin Jones. It was a horrible combination of theater and bureaucracy and the point of it was to punish whoever the SAO delivered for punishment.
@affirmingflame1 and I started a whole project about this so it’s not like I wasn’t aware before but just...you have to sit through this and see how smoothly the prosecutors go through the motions of obstructing and lying.
In the minute between when I sat down to wait for the jury to come in and deliver their verdict and when they did, I had this existentially dreadful moment of realizing that the population of innocent people in prison is probably large enough that it would even shock me.
Just the fucking ease with which they hid evidence and WHOLE WITNESSES means that this is far from the only case where they won by any means because winning is not just the main point, it is literally the only point.
By the end of this year, over 300 people will have been murdered in our city and there is no apparatus in place that is even putting any effort into pretending to be searching for the truth about who murdered them.
There may be legal justifications in rule books and in caselaw, but there is no legitimate societal good or morally justifiable reason for the state to work to keep evidence and witnesses they have in their possession from being known to a jury.
None of this makes any sense until it does, and it does the minute you accept that the purpose of that whole performance was to punish the person selected for punishment, and that that selection can be made for many reasons and “he did the thing” doesn’t have to be one of them.
And in this case the ONLY way to make sense of any of it is by accepting that the police planted a gun on a victim of their own brutality. (And if you haven’t learned this case to the depth people learned it by attending court, your opinion is both unwelcome and fucking stupid.)
Kelly’s been talking about this for years and we all say all the time that there are thousands of Keiths, but if you witnessed that demented circus you should be real fucking worried about whether even a fraction of the deception happens in all their cases. And it must.
Which means we should literally open the prison doors and fucking hope for the best, because chances are quite good we haven’t locked up any of the right people (I’m adopting only for this tweet the idea that any people are the “right” ones to lock in cages).
All these people who occasionally remember to give a shit about violence in Baltimore when it helps them with their internet fear-porn should at least pretend to be outraged that the criminal courts are basically fucking holograms.
This is why I get up and flee rooms when someone puts some dystopian TV show on. We already fucking have all that and it makes me want to scream until my throat bleeds.
I’m going to go smoke weed and find the fluffiest possible podcast and try to forget I know any of this until tomorrow when I will get back on the tasks related to trying to extract at least this one young person from this awful fucking system.
