Here's "who besides yimbys," a housing struggle thread for #vanre #vanpoli #bcpoli
Woodsquat, an autonomous direct action that took place over 92 days in fall 2002: woodsquat.wordpress.com/about/
There are now 200 units of non-market housing on that site. There are also too many units of market condos, and the Woodward's also contributed to the brute force gentrification of the Downtown Eastside: thetyee.ca/News/2015/02/2…
The occupation of 58 W. Hastings, led by indigenous elders, demanding the whole site be built with welfare and pension-rate housing: vancouver.mediacoop.ca/story/2908
The community continues to fight against attempts to co-opt that struggle -- including by the OP and others, who say that the demands that the elders made are wrong, and that having only low-income housing on the site is bad for poor people
You might be asking: "hey, why are we applauding a bunch of well-off "urbanists" who show up at a few city hearings to perform support for low-income housing, but attacking and undermining low-income indigenous elders who organize for and demand low-income housing?" GOOD QUESTION
The struggle for the Balmoral and Regent hotels to be turned into dignified and affordable low-income housing (no yimbys, obvs): cbc.ca/news/canada/br…
The city moved to expropriate those hotels, but they now might give up and turn them over to a really bad non-profit (Heritage Charitable Foundation is just a rebranded Community Builders Group - google them + West Hotel) - write the Mayor and Council! straight.com/news/1266971/c…
The (not-yimby) DTES community continues to push for the Regent and Balmoral to be torn down and turned into dignified low-income housing bc.ctvnews.ca/some-dtes-resi…
Hey, here's the (not yimby) North Star Squat: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sta…
How about the work the decidedly not-yimby @stopdisplacemnt is doing in the GVRD and Vancouver Island to occupy lands with tent cities and push for resident-run housing?
Or @ctconcerngrp and @chinatownaction, who have done so much work to defend Chinatown and stop #105Keefer themainlander.com/2018/03/15/chi…
And @pivotlegal, working every day to demand that the rights of homeless people are respected pivotlegal.org/homes_for_all
This thread's already too long, and I could go longer, but the point: there would not be a single public hearing for a non-market development that a yimby could pride himself for a 5 min speech to without the countless hours of work done by these people who "don't do anything"
Countless hours of work by people in poor and racialized communities to resist displacement and demand safe, decent, dignified, affordable housing disappears in a puff of smoke whenever some tech worker in a checked shirt speaks for five minutes at a council hearing
I'm not having it; neither should you.
One last thing before I go to bed: bravo, @BC_ACORN @YVRTenantsUnion @stopdisplacemnt, and everyone who's been fighting hard against mass evictions, for this victory in Burnaby: the strongest proposals in the country against demovictions and renovictions
