1. You might know that the United States is the only developed country that does not have guaranteed paid maternity leave

But did you know that the average length of paid leave that new moms get in other developed countries is now 52 WEEKS!

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
2. The Trump campaign is touting its support for paid leave as a way to win back female voters.

But Ivanka and her dad endorsed an actual proposal yesterday and (surprise!) the entire thing is a scam

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
3. The proposal Ivanka endorsed yesterday allows new parents to take a $5,000 LOAN and then pay it back through increased taxes over the next 10 years.

This isn't paid leave.

This is paying for your own leave.

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
4. Why is this plan so terrible?

Republicans insist any paid leave plan be REVENUE NEUTRAL

So you are left with rearranging the deck chairs

(Keep in mind these same Republicans just voted for $1 TRILLION in corporate tax cuts that had no offsets)

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
5. The 5K loan endorsed by Ivanka would finance about 7 wks of leave for someone making a 35K salary

The average paid leave offered by developed countries was 17 weeks IN 1970

This is a worse plan than what other developed countries offered 50 YEARS AGO

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
6. BTW, if you are interested in ACTUAL ISSUES like paid leave and not just horse race politics about polls (that don't mean anything at this point anyway) you might want to check out my newsletter, Popular Information

You can subscribe (free!) at popular.info
7. There was a detailed poll taken last year about paid leave. 80% of Americans support it.

Most voters want employers to at least share the cost of paid leave

The Ivanka plan, where employees pay for the entire cost, is supported by ONLY 2% of voters

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
8. The idea, I think, is just to say that Trump supports paid leave and hope no one pays attention to the details.

But it's also astounding how modest even PROGRESSIVE paid leave proposals are in the United States

popular.info/p/paying-for-y…
9. The FAMILY Act would provide 12 weeks of leave for new parents. It would be paid for by a 0.2% payroll tax on employers and employees.

So it's much better than the Ivanka plan but still worse than other developed countries had it 50 years ago

1. Nancy Mace's bathroom bill targeting the first trans woman elected to Congress is not just discriminatory bullying

It is also brazenly hypocritical Mace previously claimed she was A CHAMPION OF TRANS EQUALITY

2. “I strongly support LGBTQ rights and equality,” Mace said in March 2021. “No one should be discriminated against.” Mace added that she believed "religious liberty, the First Amendment, gay rights, and transgender equality can all coexist."

3. Today, Mace has abandoned her support of "transgender equality." Her current position appears to be that trans people do not exist. Mace described McBride as "an incoming Congressman who likes to wear mini skirts and wants to invade the privacy of women" Image

The piece published by Hegseth claimed that rape required both the failure to consent and "duress," and women who are passed out cannot experience "duress" Image

1. @elonmusk has every right to support Trump but he has become one of the most malign forces in politics

He has used his control of this platform to spread lies, many deeply rooted in racism, to millions of people

It is likely the most expensive disinformation campaign ever
2. Musk spent 9-figures financing a Super PAC, America PAC, to support Trump

American PAC created political ad that repeatedly called Kamala Harris the c-word.

Despite some reporting to the contrary, the ad was never taken down.

3. America PAC also used Musk's extreme wealth to manipulate people, giving them the impression that they could "win" $1 million by signing a petition when it was not a lottery and the people who received the money were predetermined

1. Trump is not a policy wonk and is not eager to talk about what specific policies he would pursue if he returns to the White House.

But in the closing hours of the campaign things are coming into focus.

2. One point of contention is Project 2025, the 922-page blueprint written by members of the first Trump administration under the auspices of Heritage.

Trump has said he "has no idea who is behind it."

We now have proof this was a blatant lie

3. Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts, told the Financial Times that he is "personally close" with Trump and talks to him "often." Roberts says that "based on conversations with President Trump and his associates… some large percentage of these recommendations will be in the mix for implementation."

1. @JeffBezos has made CHOICES

He chose to buy the @washingtonpost

He chose, despite his conflicts, to intervene in the paper's editorial decisions & spike an endorsement of Harris

Bezos claims people who care about journalism have no choice but to accept his decisions — and trust his benevolent leadership
2. The only alternative giving him a pass, according to Bezos, is to rely on "off-the-cuff podcasts, inaccurate social media posts and other unverified news sources."

Bezos is wrong.

3. The Post employs amazing journalists

But it is possible to do meaningful journalism without being under the thumb of a conflicted billionaire

Independent outlets like @ProPublica, @404mediaco, @MarshallProj, the @TexasTribune, @MotherJones, the @TheProspect, @BulwarkOnline and, yes, Popular Information do it every day

1. @ElonMusk is spending 9-figures to elect Trump, appears alongside Trump at rallies, and his Super PAC is coordinating w/the Trump campaign

Musk just produced the most misogynistic ad in the history of politics

Coverage of the ad has ranged from muted to non-existent Image
2. "America really can't afford a 'C-Word' in the White House right now," America PAC posted, adding a laughing emoji. "Kamala Harris is a ‘C word,’" the narrator of the ad says. "You heard that right. A big ole ‘C word.’"

popular.info/p/the-most-mis…
3. The "joke" of the ad is that Harris is a "communist." Of course, Harris is not a communist. And the ad makes no effort to show she is a communist. The line is only included as a pretext to repeatedly use a crass, misogynistic slur against Harris. Image
