(1/3) The Hereford Cathedral Library in Hereford, England is the largest surviving chained library with its chains, rods and locks intact. In earlier periods, books were often chained to the shelves to safeguard them from potential thieves.
(2/3) The chains were fitted to the cover of the books via ringlets, and were long enough to allow the books to be taken from their shelves and read, but not removed from the library itself. Only the librarian could remove the books from the chain using a key.
(3/3) The books were typically shelved with their foredges facing the reader, rather than their spines. This may seem like the wrong way, but it allowed the books to be lifted down and opened without needing to be turned around, thus avoiding tangling the chain.

My agent👇on the need for authors to conserve energy, and the longterm value of building a brand vs promoting a single project. I struggle saying "no" to requests. But podcasts, interviews, etc are all time consuming & can't always be justified. Please don't take it personally!
Case-in-point: I've received three podcast requests and one interview request today. If I committed to every single request that came through, it would quickly become a full-time (unpaid) job. And ultimately, I would never write a second book.
That said: I love that people are interested in my work and will always strive to do what I can, as public engagement is very important to me. Just know it's a tough job being a freelancer, and us writers can't commit to all things all the time.

In the documentary Tales of the Grim Sleeper - about one of history's most prolific serial killers - I learned LA police officers sometimes used the acronym “N.H.I.” (“no humans involved”) to describe the slayings of prostitutes & drug addicts in the 80s. vanityfair.com/hollywood/2014…
I had never heard of the "Grim Sleeper," and was shocked to discover he may have killed hundreds of women over the span of many decades. The documentary does a good job exploring why so few people knew about the killings, including those most vulnerable living in his community.
So little attention is given to the victims of horrific crimes - as @HallieRubenhold teaches us with #TheFive, the first full-length book dedicated to the five victims killed by Jack the Ripper. If you'd like to check out Tales of the Grim Sleeper, you can find it on Hulu.
