Couple of yrs ago in Montgomery, I saw a PCA pastor I knew who was back in town. Moved south to pastor a church. Very Bible focused. Told him I stepped away from pastorate to help churches minister to/advocate for immigrants. He grew uncomfortable and ended conversation. Over. 1/
2) As “Biblical” as he claimed to be, he had no desire to even discuss or consider what the Bible said in ministry to sojourners. I get it. Churches have different seasons and can’t do everything. But, that rejection happened a lot and it was often w/ conservative Bible churches.
3) I got used to it. Didn’t let it bother me. Took it as God not opening that door. But, then I’d see some of the same people hitting another issue HARD saying we need to be “Biblical” and not compromise or ignore Scripture. I realized they meant that for some issues, not all ...
4) ...But, isn’t that what we accuse liberal-progs of? Picking and choosing? Emphasizing some parts of Scripture and ignoring others? Removing context and not taking the Bible seriously? I saw conservative SBC, PCA, and pastors/churches do that ALL over the South. Just saying.
5) I saw a conservative commentator the other day bash Episcopalians for not taking the Bible seriously. I don’t want to get into that, but I’ve been left wondering how seriously SBCers and PCAers and others take it when it comes to the sojourner, race, or justice issues?
6) My point is NOT to say that every church has to do/talk about all the things all the time. That’s impossible. But, maybe we should have some humility, listen, give space, and not claim to have the corner on being biblical re: issues when we have trouble loving our neighbor?
