Jeffress is riding high, defends everything Trump says/does, and is basically taunting SBC ldrs who have chosen to stop responding to Trump. He wants to fight with them to make the distinctions more clear. Jeffress believed he represents mainstream SBC. apnews.com/6224548fdbb645…
2) Good chance the 2020 election will make 2016 look like child’s play, that Trump will double down on racialized rhetoric, and ethnic division will grow. Evangelical ldrs like Jeffress, Graham, Falwell etc will tell us we have to support all of this or we’re weakening Xianity.
3) My interest is less in politics and who wins elections than in the church’s witness to both parties/sides after elections. But, it should not escape us that if White Evangelical support for Trump collapsed this Fall, there would be multiple candidates emerge to primary him.
4) We either lack imagination, courage, or we like the current trajectory. Sadly, unless you are pro-Trump as a conservative evangelical, there might not be any major church ldrs who will represent an alternative view in 2020. Will Evangelical = ProTrump? We are headed there.
5) My own position is I’m not anti-Trump. If he were to repent and do the right thing tomorrow, I would praise God and support any good/right action he engages in. My view on politicians is totally neutral. I neither love them nor hate them. They are all just people, not saviors.
6) But, what I DO support is what is right and true and the Better WAY of Jesus, which means that HOW we treat people really matters and the Bible has a lot to say about that. If we get a few policy wins and wreck our witness, the end result will be far worse than where we began.
7) We’re not arguing about politics here. This is all a spiritual discussion about what is right, good, true, and what God says. The whole nation is embroiled in a spiritual discussion, but Evangelicals THINK this is about politics and either grab for power or check out. Sad.
8) Only way out of this trap of deception that has been set for us is to disavow grasping/holding power for our own benefit and embrace the Cross. A theology of the Cross instead of glory is so needed. Stop seeing politics as a means to a win and see it as an arena for witness.
9) Anyway, while Jeffress gloats at the capitulation of the church to Trumpism and the ongoing silence of those we consider leaders, we need to pray that we would all embrace the Cross and that the reality of Philippians 2:1-11 would be our public witness. biblegateway.com/passage/?searc…
