For those saying manifesto draws from the Left, the combo of anti-immigrant themes w/ fear of overpopulation leading to scarcity and rejection of nonwhites reminds me of John Tanton’s triad of anti-immigrant population control groups like @CIS_org @FAIRImmigration @NumbersUSA.
2) Tanton’s thinking and fears animated those groups which advised Jeff Sessions, Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, Brietbart, and Donald Trump. Environmental fears are not only the province of the Left. Mixed with racial fears, they also find a home in the anti-immigrant Right.
3) “Tanton was one of nation’s leading anti-immigration figures over past 4 decades, but he wasn’t a right-wing conservative. He was a left-wing tree-hugger obsessed w/ overpopulation. Oppo to immigration, legal/illegal, was simply a means to that end.”

4) “For Tanton, population stabilization began at home. The Michigan native and his wife organized one of the state’s first Planned Parenthood associations in 1965. By the mid-1970s, he was the head of an outfit called Zero Population Growth.”
5) “Convinced that immigrants were primarily to blame for overpopulation—and frustrated that his fellow conservationists weren’t taking the immigrant threat seriously enough—he struck out on his own.”
6) “In 1979 Tanton founded the Federation for American Immigration Reform. In 1983 he formed the American Immigration Control Foundation. Later came NumbersUSA, the Center for Immigration Studies ...”
7) “Tanton hosted immigration conferences that included white supremacists. He started the Social Contract Press, which published anti-immigrant tracts by white nationalists and Holocaust deniers. He didn’t care why you opposed immigration, so long as you did.”
8) Occasionally, “Tanton would be profiled in media, which usually played up his connections w/ Republicans & bigots and played down his connections w/ environmentalists and the “people are pollution” crowd Some of these Republicans had no idea whom they had gotten in bed with.”
9) Re: El Paso Shooter’s Manifesto, it seems odd to compare environmental fears from the Left w/ anti-immigrant fears from the Far Right, John Tanton and his anti-immigrant, population control groups embodied that combo. They also influenced Sessions, Miller, Bannon, Trump.
10) Here is another obituary of Tanton, who died two weeks ago at age 85, connecting his anti-immigrant, white nationalist fervor with radical environmentalism. latimes.com/obituaries/sto…
11) This story has been told many times, but it shows how Sessions and Miller were influenced by CIS, FAIR (founded by Tanton), and others to develop their anti-immigrant agenda. They then teamed with Bannon in 2013 and Trump in 2015. nytimes.com/2018/06/18/us/…
12) Just read shooter’s manifesto. His ideas remind one of Madison Grant, eugenics, background of 1924 immigration restriction bill, segregationists, Tanton, and other nefarious concepts that, as he says, predate Trump, who isn’t the cause, but a symptom. vox.com/2018/1/18/1689…
