We definitely need to pay more attention to mental health issues but mass shootings and gun violence are a different issue all together. They should not be linked. When we do so, we ignore the true factors and stigmatize mental health concerns. (1)
According to an APA publication, less than 1% of yearly homicides involving a firearm are conducted by individuals w/a serious mental illness. They are more likely to harm themselves (suicide), which accounts for the majority of gun related deaths. (2)
“The overall contribution of people with serious mental illness to violent crimes is only about 3%. When these crimes are examined in detail, an even smaller percentage of them are found to involve firearms.”
