Trump incites his followers constantly with anti-immigrant rants based on lies & disinformation. Fox "News" & GOP amplify & parrot this rhetoric. If you watch only Fox News, you would believe America is under attack by immigrant gangs.
Migrant caravans would seem to you to be an invasion force, containing violent gangsters & Middle Eastern terrorists instead of families, women & children, fleeing to safety. El Paso shooter drove 9 hours to El Paso specifically to kill Hispanics whom he said were “invading” US.
It's time for us to stop pretending it's normal & ok for a president to spread lies & paranoid fantasies instead of truth. His words carry weight & he KNOWS it, but chooses to spread dangerous untruths anyway. Trump is the greatest national security risk America has EVER faced.

Anti-Semitism did not begin, or end, with the Holocaust. It has been around for thousands of years & Trump is exploiting it for power. Anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise worldwide, associated with an overall rise in intolerance toward marginalized groups, esp. immigrants.
Anti-Semitic acts in US increased nearly 60% in 2017, according to Anti-Defamation League. ADL documented 1,987 anti-Semitic incidents in US in 2017, a 57% rise since the year previous. It was the highest single-year increase since data collection began in 1979.

And, yes, those ARE concentration camps on the border. We should be particularly disturbed by parallels between how Trump's administration is treating those detained in the camps & how Hitler began. Hitler began with "deportations" & labor camps, not with death camps.
Detained migrants in Trump's camps - children included - are being denied soap, showers, toothpaste, beds. This isn’t because they can’t afford these items. The real intent is far more sinister. It's a tactic Hitler used also.
Forcing refugees to sleep on concrete floors, unwashed - like animals - isn't simply to save money. It's to make them seem less human & less deserving of care. Trump calls refugees an “infestation," "invasion," "animals." This is language that leads to genocide.
This is a tactic also used by the Nazis to further de-humanize Jews - they didn't provide soap or allow Jews to clean themselves. That meant detainees were smelly - as all humans would be in those circumstances - easier to see as non-human. Hitler also used the term “infestation"
The goal of de-humanizing them is to make it easier for their base to accept this abuse. Trump supporters already see them as less than human because of their skin color. If these were blonde tots being forced to lie in filth on cold concrete, GOP would be going insane.
When Trump's base look at these children, they don't see innocent, traumatized children. They see an "infestation," an enemy. The dirtier, smellier & more lice-ridden they are (kids are being forced to share combs among themselves, too), the easier for GOP to see them that way.
Dehumanizing people is the first step in making it acceptable to carry out atrocities on them. Think of the many ways Hitler dehumanized Jews - yellow stars, then tattooed numbers, shaved heads, nakedness.
Goal is to make them "other," non-people, not deserving of same regard we give to fellow humans. Pen them up like cattle, refuse to let them bathe so the stench is unbearable, let disease & lice run rampant - then step back & declare them animals, non-people - things you can harm
Think of the many highly-educated, talented, successful Jewish people who were stripped of their identities, achievements, their very selves & rendered identical in Hitler's camps. In the camps, they were weak, ill, bald - terrified animal bodies scrounging to survive.
It's so much more difficult to harm or kill a PERSON - a man or woman or child in clothes like you wear, with a job like you have, with a name - than it is to harm a smelly, dirty lice-ridden animal sleeping on concrete. THAT's the real goal in denying them showers, soap, beds.
Trump's base is ok w/ separating families because they don't see families. They don't believe these people are really people - not people like themselves. If someone took away THIER kids, it would destroy them. Yet they have no empathy because brown people aren't human to them.
The racism that permits this is extreme - it says not only do we not care about trauma inflicted on brown children, we also don't believe the parents truly suffer. It's the kind of racism that says non-white parents don't feel the way white parents would - they're less than human
It's a racism that equates non-whites w/ animals & believes they don't have same feelings for their children that white parents do. It's a racism that allowed whites to sell a slave's children & pretend their pain was insignificant.
You see this racism in the way the right talks about migrants - that they're terrible parents for sending or taking kids on this journey in 1st place. The right has no empathy & cannot imagine themselves in same situation because they don't feel human connection to refugees.
It is, in short, white supremacy - a disease, a crime against humanity. Trump uses it. GOP uses it. Hitler used it. Far more Americans than we'd like to admit embrace it.

I'm beginning to wonder if Trump's mistake in substituting "Toledo" for "Dayton" is, in fact, a mistake & not another neo-Nazi dog whistle. Toledo has a bit of history w/ neo-Nazis - from 2005 neo-Nazi riots to it being home to neo-Nazi who killed Heather Heyer in Charlottesville
