@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD First the question is what do the writers and underlying studies mean as mental illness. Connotatively or denotatively ? Vast majority of shooters are male and under age 30 - is that a risk factor and what would we do about it 1/
@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD While some mass shooters have a serious mental disorder, the largest percentage don't. Since large scale stranger mass shooting events are relatively rare and mental illnesses of any kind are common, the pre-test probability of identifying and intervening is low 2/
@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD The rates of mental disorders or disaffected young men don't vary materially across countries. Means do - see mass knife attacks in Asia. They are just less lethal and effective means. The challenge is that we have a constitutional structure that understandably protects rights 3/
@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD This includes 2nd amendment & also 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th. These control gun rights & the right of persons with mental disorders to not be detained or have other rights infringed. Mental disorders include veterans with PTSD, kids with anxiety, mom's with post-partum depression 4/
@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD So we need to be very clear what we are talking about and we aren't. So what to do. So called red flag laws are a good step primarily as they use a lower threshold and don't treat persons with mental disorders differently that others who threaten - eg domestic abusers 5/
@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD More robust background checks would be good but in regard to mental disorders it is only those who have been legally adjudicated. A small sample but the standard shouldn't be lower for mental disorders than felons. The largest source of US variance is availability of guns 6/
@jflier @madras_bertha @washingtonpost @AllenFrancesMD We're not different in rate of mental disorders and even the NRA focuses on "adjudicated mentally ill" which is primarily a rare formal court process for persons involuntarily committed Assault weapons with high capacity magazines may be, in the data I have seen, the variance 7/7
