#Thread – Future AFV Tech (Take My Money!)

Recently, ‘Carmel’ (below) got me (and most of #miltwitter) thinking.
What else might AFV of the near-ish future have?

I’m not talking teleportation or anything obscene – I’m talking achievable advancements.

Up front – Ground rules.

I’m not interested in a tank/AFV/CRV/APC or a specific platform comparison.

Let’s talk in platform/role agnostic terms (where possible) – It gets too emotional and there’s already enough in-fighting!

Let’s also assume the AFVs remain ‘manned’
WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Watch the below. Is that feasible? Maybe, maybe not.

But what it shows is this:

People are thinking about how to kill us. Being on the ‘HVT/HPT list’ is not where you want to be. Especially when blokes like the below are around.
AMMUNITION

To penetrate En armour, you need first-rate ammo. That means large, heavy rounds which also results in stowage issues (numbers).

Enter telescoped ammo. Not new. But important. Smaller rounds = carry more = kill more with the same/less vehicles.
Let’s go further.

Maybe it’s programmable. But not just like current ammo. Imagine every round like the DARPA developed ‘EXACTO’ ammo.

If you had this, potentially you could kill without direct line of sight (don’t be there/seen part of the onion)
Could you launch a missile/projectile which contained a swarm of micro killer drones when attacking a known defensive location?

Assume you have PID of targets (negating the ethics of AI killing humans)?

Could the swarm also target weak points on AFV?
TARGET ACQUISITION

To kill, you must acquire. APS is everywhere. Does that make LRFs obsolete?

Does the LRF become secondary to another means of ranging the target (passive/AI assisted target size comparison/dual sight-head to determine angle/dist)?
Think back to the non-line of sight kills. Your Fire Control System SHOULD be able to be linked to a drone - maybe for now its tethered.

You can then ID (and get a firing solution) from defilade, advance and kill (automatically), or fire missile/ projectile while protected.
We know of full-colour night vision and improved FLIR.

What if you could see in the multispectral/hyperspectral realms? Literally ‘see’ electronic signatures.

Link it with the potential embedded electronic warfare equip and you could get a range = firing solution.
ARMOUR/PASSIVE PROTECTION

Armour (armor for 🇺🇸 pals).
It’s in the name of AFVs for a reason.
It keeps us alive. But it weighs a ton (literally).

It’s one of the hindrances to the ‘true next gen’ AFV development. But it’s not all bad. People are thinking.
The ‘increase armour – increase lethality’ cycle will continue. But force projection is already an issue with current AFV size/weight.

Enter new materials (eg below). Is it the answer? Maybe not (yet). But it’s a step in the right direction.

There’s research presently into ‘shock mitigating and reinforcing molecular nanocomposites’.

There’s also potential that through nano-tech, the armour could ‘heal itself’ after a hit.

Maybe if a shot is detected, the armour reinforces in the direction of the projectile?
ACTIVE PROTECTION

We know why APS is needed.

But it’s also flawed. Present systems (the radar) can be detected from 100km+.

What has APS? AFVs. Turn it on at your own peril. That single ATGM pales in comparison to a rocket fire mission
Maybe we aim for an ‘APS bubble’ – vehicles not only protecting themselves but also their wingman/other C/S?

A passive detection and hard kill combo could be devastating, especially when the entire team is within the bubble, protected, safe - but lethal!
With AI assistance, will we (Western nations) allow the APS/turret to slew and kill automatically when a threat is identified?

Does this contradict the ethical standpoint regarding machines deciding when to kill (see below thread)?
ELECTRONIC

Everything communicates. So why not target it? Make every AFV a mobile EW platform. Think ‘Growler’ but not as powerful.

With a network of EW assets, targets will become clear and therefore targetable.
STEALTH

Not being identified/Acquired is also important.

Maybe we need to invest in technologies like ‘Quantum Stealth’ and ‘ADAPTIV’ camouflage.

Maybe we also need to camouflage our electronic signatures to appear as something less valuable?
Maybe we need to consider the power pack and drive train.

AFVs are often loud and easily detected.

Maybe we opt for a hybrid-electric power pack noting it will hopefully be moving a much lighter vehicle around?
CONCLUSION

This is not extensive and likely nothing view. I’m more interested in your thoughts and ideas regarding what would an AFV will look like in an ideal world, where money isn’t a restricting factor.
