#Thread #Misinformation
On requests from colleagues, I'm sharing details reg the #SatyamevaJayate training program which taught to more than 80K kids in #Kannur how to detect, verify & respond to misinformation online.

Link to the full ppt shared at the end of this thread.
The first two slides emphasise the centrality of truth and the pursuit of truth in our National and Constitutional discourse
#FakeNews is defined in the next slide, with reference to the role we all play, unwittingly or deliberately, in its dissemination. Our role could be active or passive.

Even our silence is an act that aids the spread of #misinformation
For those who unwittingly fall for fake news, there are baic reasons why
A discussion follows—
The answers to each of the questns are the same in both cases
🔹We should, else we will be victims soon
🔹Silence is encouragement
🔹At the earliest, else the offender finally crosses the line & inevitably hurts someone or gets into deep trouble himself
#TubeExperiment - The tube in a box is changed e.g. A Fevi-quick tube is placed in a toothpaste box.

At the end, student 5 is told to apply the "paste" onto her teeth.

She opens the box, sees the Fevi-quick tube and obviously refuses!

A question is then posed to the class.
#TubeExperiment (contd.)
🔹What if Student 5 couldn't read or was too trusting and applied the paste onto her teeth. Who would be responsible for the damage?

Hence, always check before you forward. You never know how an unverified, seemingly funny msg could hurt someone
What's the first question one must ask on receiving "news" or info on whatsapp?

How should we ask it?

And why?
Followed by slides that contain an an example of a typical message without a source, and how best to respond to it.
We then demystify the ad revenue model of the Internet by explaining what #Clickbait is, how we are manipulated into clicking on it.

When we drive traffic to a purveyor of fake news, we enriche him while impoverishing tellers of truth
An example of #Clickbait is shared. A prank which many innocently fall for, in the hope that we might, just might, maybe get a pair of shoelaces, if not a shoe.

Every click has a consequence. What is it?
And finally, we explain the #FilterBubble

Kids are told -
🔹 what Social Media does to keep us engaged
🔹 how that limits a comprehensive view of the world
🔹 why we need to protect ourselves from being trapped in filter bubbles
🔹 not to rely on social media food news
#Practicals The kids are shown multiple instances of misinformation and then asked to predict if it is true of false.

The solutions and the methods thru which they can be found are shared subsequently.
For those interested in using this material for training/awareness, please do so! The kind ones may credit "Kannur District Admin" as original source
