Re: AMNESTY, I never thought of this till @bartbarber mentioned it today, but all my direct male ancestors took up arms against the U.S. & fought for the Confederacy. They were brought back into the Union via AMNESTY. Why do we oppose that for immigrants? politico.com/story/2018/12/…
2) Why do we oppose AMNESTY on principle, I mean? “president [Johnson] extended “unconditionally, and without reservation ... a full pardon and amnesty for the offence [sic] of treason against the United States, or of adhering to their enemies during the late Civil War..”
3) If we think about it, the Confederate flag and the former Confederate states represents and benefited from one of the largest AMNESTY declarations in America history AFTER taking up arms against the United States. Yet, this is the main area opposing amnesty for immigrants.
4) I’m not promoting amnesty, per se. I just think it’s interesting how many Southerners oppose the concept of amnesty on principle when we’ve benefited from it more than any other region of America. When you see this flag, think AMNESTY.
5) The purpose of Johnson’s AMNESTY was BUILDING UP the nation: TO “renew and fully restore confidence and fraternal feeling among the whole, and their respect for and attachment to the national [e.g., federal] government, designed by its patriotic founders for the general good.”
6) I’m not saying everyone should come here and we should have amnesty for all. But, the way amnesty has been derided as a foul concept in and of itself, especially in the South, is ironic considering how our ancestors benefited. Our HERITAGE is one of mass amnesty. Lol.
