Updated info on attack on the Oslo mosque: “Norwegian citizen of Norwegian background” in his 20s shoots his way into mosque. Is then overpowered by three men, including 75-year old who received minor injuries (but was not shot) and held the shooter down. #Oslo
Norwegian TV2 reports that 2 hours before the armed man attacked the mosque in #Olso, he posted a message online celebrating the mosque attack in New Zealand that killed 49. tv2.no/a/10770862/
So, young white male (who had just posted material praising the New Zealand mosque mass murderer) enters an #Oslo mosque wearing a helmet and body armor firing multiple rounds. Lucky no-one killed. Also, echos of recent US mass shootings. Can only hope copycats don't spread.
If it turns out that social media posts are legit, and #Oslo mosque gunman was motivated by the mosque murderer in New Zealand, it's yet another reminder that giving killers, their views and their "manifestos" huge volumes of coverage can possibly spur others to do the same.
#Olso mosque, which was almost empty today, will be packed with people tomorrow for religious holiday. Had the shooter — who has now been charged with attempted murder — come just 24 hours later, the results could have been horrific.
Police have now found a dead body at an address connected to the #Oslo mosque shooter.
Norwegian media: The dead body found at the address connected to the #Oslo mosque shooter is a young woman who has a “family relation” to the shooter. Man now also charged with murder.
Norwegian paper VG reports that posts made in the name of the man suspected of the #Oslo mosque praised not only the Christchurch mass murder, but also the synagogue attack in San Diego and the recent killing of 22 in El Paso. vg.no/nyheter/innenr…
Police have not yet made a link to terrorism with mosque attack and related murder, but investigations continue. Police in Norway say that, because of the Muslim Eid al-adha holiday tomorrow, as of tonight extra officers will be put on duty and all police in #Oslo will be armed.
While investigation goes on, based on information so far there appear to be overlaps between #Oslo mosque shooter & other attacks: young, heavily-armed, white male attacker w/body armor, posting racist material online, targeting minority group, killing of (female) family member.
Some valid, important comments on my tweets on #Oslo mosque attacker from people saying I "amplify" the event by tweeting. I think about that. To me, it's a question of HOW it's done. Difficult to discuss/analyze media with no reference to person or event, but try to avoid hype.
Perspective on accused #Oslo mosque terrorist (and accused murderer of his sister): childhood friend says he “didn’t think he would hurt a fly” and was a “kind and humble person.” Interesting which accused terrorists are humanized in/by the media, and which are not.
