1. With respect, this is false -- and a persistent misconception. The Obama Justice Dept. ultimately determined Brown was *not* "murdered" and "likely did not have his hands up" when shot. The Obama Justice Dept. declined to charge the officer with anything.
2. The Obama Justice Dept. ultimately ruled that many witnesses who had claimed in the media (without challenge) that Brown's hands were up-- and other claims-- were "not reliable."
3. The Obama Justice Dept. determined that Brown likely *did* reach into the police vehicle and grab the police officer. There was evidence backing that up, while there was no evidence backing the claim that Wilson grabbed Brown.
4. The Obama Justice Dept. ruled that the officer appeared to fire at Brown in self-defense.
5. The Obama Justice Dept. ruled that Brown was apparently charging at the police officer when Brown was shot.
6. It's understandable that so many don't know these details because they were not well reported in the press when the Obama Justice Dept. report came out a yr later. However, it could be harmful to all to perpetuate misinformation.
7. The Washington Post *did* headline the fact that the Obama Justice Dept. determined Brown's hands were probably not raised, after all. washingtonpost.com/news/post-nati…
8. This was the Obama Justice Dept's final conclusion supporting the police officer's account versus the narrative that was carried on the news and sparked protests.
9. It's not to say there aren't issues of racism and/or bad policing, of course there are. But it is inaccurate to use Michael Brown as an example, according to the Obama Justice Dept.
10. The Michael Brown/Ferguson case, based on the Obama Justice Dept. report, is more an example of irresponsible rhetoric and unchallenged media narratives that ruined the life of a policeman who-- according to the Obama Justice Dept.-- was attacked and did nothing wrong.
11. You can read the Obama Justice Dept. report on Michael Brown and Ferguson for yourself here -- and make up your own mind. justice.gov/sites/default/…
