1. What are the ways that #EvangelicalismKills?

Conservatives love to say that ideas have consequences, but somehow they never want to examine the consequences of right-wing ideologies.

So let’s do that with this new hashtag coined by @Ashadahya.

#MondayMorning #EmptyThePews
2. Asha started the hashtag in connection with Renee Bach, an evangelical missionary in Uganda who, acting on a “calling”—rather than training and preparation—performed medical procedures only doctors are qualified to perform. And children predictably died.

3. The evangelical concept of calling is anti-intellectual. Evies love I Corinthians 1:27, “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.” That God can use anyone to do good is a nice idea. “No credentials required” is a dangerous one.

4. It’s easy to adduce more examples from the mission field, as @whereiscoreynow can also attest.

John Chau got himself killed. But he could have killed an entire people by exposing them to diseases for which they have no immunity.

5. Chau attended Oral Roberts University. In evangelical institutions, anti-intellectualism and self-serving, foolhardy missionary efforts are widely celebrated. But #EvangelicalismKills at Christian schools in more ways than that.

Check out #ExposeChristianSchools for examples.
6. Here’s a firsthand account of how growing up with evangelical anti-intellectualism contributed to my frequent suicidal ideation. I only attended K-12 Christian schools, but it took me a long time to shake the indoctrination. #EvangelicalismKills

7. The Christian school I graduated from, as is typical, tried to funnel graduates into evangelical colleges and universities. I went to a state school but have a lot of friends and relatives who went to Christian schools for college. These schools severely harm queer students.
8. And in recent years that’s something that I’ve been striving to document and expose, working with activists and advocates like @ErinGreenbean of @BraveCommons and publishing journalistic exposés:

In addition to @ErinGreenbean, follow @RSokamoto, who formerly taught in APU’s English Department, for fascinating #exvangelical insights.

10. Funny thing about evangelical colleges and universities—a substantial portion of the faculty and students want them to be less anti-intellectual and more inclusive. Here’s a thread on why such substantive change is impossible:

11. Of course, corruption reigns at the top of many evangelical institutions; this is a natural result of authoritarianism, and evangelicalism is nothing if not authoritarian. Jerry Falwell, Jr. is a great example of a shady Christian college president, but he’s not the only one.
12. You know Pat Robertson for his evangelical television empire, but you ought to know him for Regent University as well. And then there was that time he used a very dubious missionary effort as a pretext to mine for diamonds:

13. There are many more ways that #EvangelicalismKills—and disproportionately kills women, LGBTQ people, and people of color, of course. White evangelicals are America’s most nativist, pro-Trump demographic. They are behind the harm the US is doing to refugees and asylum seekers.
14. I grew up hearing Islamphobic views from evangelical pulpits and swimming in radical apocalypticism. Now that white evangelicals have vast political influence under Trump, those things are shaping American policy more than ever:

15. Evangelicals and their trad Catholic allies are behind Trump administration policies that will kill many transgender people. Being trans, I am, you may say, concerned. See also @BrynnTannehill on this topic.

16. And the notion that the GOP would never let Roe v. Wade get overturned b/c they need the issue to rally the base has long been obviously false—obviously unless you’re a privileged pundit. The radical patriarchal Right is in power. Women/people who can get pregnant will die.
17. It would be remiss of me to end a thread on how #EvangelicalismKills without mentioning science denial. Teaching young earth creationism to kids primes them to reject established science in other areas, like vaccines and climate change. #EmptyThePews

18. Finally, when you get right down to it, the god that conservative, mostly white evangelicals believe in is an abuser. #EvangelicalismKills inasmuch as it teaches you to hate yourself and to find no goodness in humanity. More detailed threads here:

19. Please tweet your own reasons #EvangelicalismKills; let’s get this trending.
