“Non-citizens.” This was all initially supposed to be about illegal immigration, not legal immigrants. That’s what they said. But, if you paid attention, it was ALWAYS about reducing LEGAL immigration, fears over changing demographics, concern about immigrants getting to vote.
2) This and millions of other stories like it are why this “Public Charge” Rule change is bunk. But, keep fulfilling the dream of only having wealthy immigrants from already developed nations be able to come here.
3) There is without question an anti-immigrant bias at work in how we are now developing policy. Anti-foreigner, fear of the foreigner, xenophobia. Let none dare call it racism, of course. But, there is a severe bias at work in myriad ways.
4) Big fear: immigrants won’t vote GOP. White Est. GOP can’t imagine immigrants/minorities would vote for them even though most immigrants/minorities are socially conservative. Why is that? Ethno-Culture, not conservatism, has become core org principle.
5) This THREAD explains well the shift of minority & immigrant populations away from the GOP. Instead of reaching out to minorities, Trump/GOP embraced a white-centered approach to identity politics based on grievance and fear of the “other.”
