Ugly confrontation between a huge crowd of protesters and a man they believe is an undercover cop has been ongoing for over an hour now. Have zip tied the man’s hands and fighting over whether to move him. He’s collapsed twice.
Having bound him fear now is his ties are too tight and could cut off circulation. Any attempt to change them causes more fights to break out among protesters.
Now he’s stuck on seats as protesters increasingly argue amongst themselves about what to do next. Need for an arbiter of some sort is desperate, airport security completely overwhelmed.
This is the dumbest, angriest incident I’ve seen during the protests so far. I asked protesters what the point was even if the man was a cop at this stage, they had no idea behind continuing to hold him.
Serious risk to the guys health just from stress and being bound and hot. Even if angriest protesters can be stopped attacking him.
This is the crowd he’d had to get though at this point. Paramedic has arrived to give him oxygen. A man just threw a fist at him and was dragged away by others.
Paramedic checking the guy’s heart rate. There are about a dozen calmer people around him and a couple hundred angry testosterone filled protesters between them and the exit.
Its all so ugly and angry and nihilistic. Asked kids who said he was faking what if he wasn’t, they said who cares. Asked what if he dies, who cares. Asked them what they think will happen if he is a cop and he dies, “so they shutdown HK? Good! We are ready for it, we want it.”
Photo of the man being airdropped around while people laugh. Paramedics have got him to the main terminal area where at least it’s cooler and calmer. Trying to get him to an ambulance.
Stuck in the main terminal now. Crowd blocking paramedics who are trying to work out what to do. Clap them sarcastically whenever they fall back.
That few seem to get how bad the optics of blocking paramedics from reaching a casualty (even if you think they’re faking!) boggles the mind.
This is the most out of control, angry and just plain nasty I think I’ve ever seen a protest in Hong Kong. Unlike clashes with police, no matter how violent, this is hundreds vs one person, and a handful of paramedics desperately trying to help.
It just shows how much trust in the authorities has broken down. Even paramedics viewed with suspicion. Police nowhere in sight. A bunch of angry kids making life and death decisions that could shape the rest of the protests.
One (one!) protester now trying to help paramedics get a stretcher to the man. Crowd screaming at her but she’s so far giving as good as she got.
This was a movement famous for clearing thousands of people out of the way on the streets to let an ambulance through, now blocking a stretcher while a handful of more reasonable people in tears try to reason with them.
Where are pro dem lawmakers? Situation desperately needs someone, anyone that the crowd would listen to to prevent it spiralling further out of control.
The footage of this is going to be so ugly. Even if the man survives, protesters laughing and shouting abuse at him and paramedics will be constant on Chinese state media.
Man is thankfully upright and conscious after paramedics treated him. Crowd still surrounding him however. Still no way out.
Standoff continues. There’s no one with any authority to attempt to broker a deal that enough of the crowd would accept. Handful of protesters have tried but they’ve been shouted down. Feels like most reasonable people (to say nothing of pan dem lawmakers) have stayed home.
Protesters now screaming at reporters standing above check in desks taking photos and filming crowd. “Journalist mother fucker,” some shouted. Claimed at least one was a cop.
“Hong Kong people are in a very very dangerous moment, some things in front of you may look crazy but we have no choice,” Max, 35, said. “It’s just like war, we’re fighting for our future.”
Firemen here now too in attempt to help. Protesters say they trust firemen 100%, but then they said they trust paramedics, who they’ve been blocking for hours now, as well.
Most surreal moments have been people (seeing press vest) come up to “explain” to me things they’re clearly getting from Telegram, claiming without evidence the guy is 100% a cop because someone Googled him, or that he had weapons (different guy) or that he was faking fainting.
Police arriving gave medics enough of a window to force their way through the crowd and out to a waiting ambulance. 60 year old security guard who had been trying for hours to help the man leave hugged me, tears in his eyes, so relieved.
Medics and airport security were absolute heroes tonight, working in incredibly tense, scary situation. Never gave up. Man appeared to be unconscious getting into ambulance but hopefully their work paid off.
