Lately, I've been trying to understand how evangelicals can support someone like trump.

I'm leaning on the distinction btw. beliefs/principles and culture.

Evangelicals are, fundamentally, cultural Christians. Christian principles are secondary.

Short thread.
Because trump is a defender of their culture, evangelicals are willing to overlook the fact that he constantly violates Christian principles & values (turn the other cheek, love thy neighbor, etc).
Christianity is more than just principles & values, it's a way of life for them.

Christianity is more about justifying and reinforcing that way of life than it is a guide for living a principled, moral life.
So, they interpret and cherry pick bible verses to validate their culture, like when they point to biblical verses for proof that God disapproves of LGBT or approves of racial segregation.
And their God is more the Old Testament god who can be judgmental, punitive, and authoritarian.

Interestingly, kind of like how trump is.

Of course they say they believe in Christian principles and try to abide by them.

It's just that those values and principles are secondary to the protection & affirmation of their culture.
So, they have no qualms about throwing "love thy neighbor" out the window to defend their way of life from secular liberal culture.

To them, it's not hypocritical, it's about priorities. It's life or death. Their Christian way of life trumps Christian values.
