This is a real article from the @WSJ:

TRUMP HAS ASKED ADVISERS WHETHER THE U.S. CAN ACQUIRE GREENLAND - DOW JONES, CITING SOURCES

wsj.com/articles/trump…
Uh...

“Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.” wsj.com/articles/trump…
“Some of his advisers have supported the concept, saying it was a good economic play, two of the people said, while others dismissed it as a fleeting fascination that will never come to fruition.“

So they’ve had conversations about it. Omg. wsj.com/articles/trump…
“It is also unclear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland even if the effort were serious.” wsj.com/articles/trump…
WAIT. President Truman offered to buy Greenland from Denmark for $100M in 1946??? wsj.com/articles/trump…
My mind is blown.
In 1946, the U.S. tried and failed to buy Greenland from Denmark with $100 million in gold. apnews.com/9d4a8021c36508…

Other alternatives were discussed, including trading land in Alaska and negotiating oil rights.

The U.S. ended up with the military bases it wanted anyway.
The Pentagon was ***serious*** about buying Greenland from Denmark, and President Truman’s Secretary of State James Byrnes even discussed the subject with Danish Foreign Minister Gustav Rasmussen at a UN meeting. mentalfloss.com/article/58212/…
I’m in deep now. Here’s a @nytimes article from 1869(!!) nytimes.com/1869/07/19/arc…
Apparently we wanted to buy Iceland too. grapevine.is/mag/articles/2…
Here’s something you can read on America’s efforts to buy Greenland AND Iceland: “A Report on the Resources of Iceland and Greenland” rse.hi.is/wp-content/upl…
But...

“When Pierce’s report-in-the-making [on why the U.S. should consider buying Greenland and Iceland] was mentioned in a U.S. Senate hearing about the purchase of Alaska, it reportedly elicited laughter from the room.” grapevine.is/mag/articles/2…
Lol. Denmark wanted the U.S. to recognize its sovereignty over all of Greenland as part of a deal when it sold the West Indian Islands to us. books.google.com/books?id=gE8JT…
“The United States oversaw Greenland after Denmark fell to the Nazis in 1940. The United States erected a variety of military installations and monitoring stations, seeing Greenland as a geostrategic midpoint between the Western Hemisphere and Europe.” nationalinterest.org/feature/why-am…
It’s amazing how fast Twitter switched from dunking on the idea of buying Greenland to expressing full-throated support.
“President Trump has on multiple occasions brought up buying Greenland from the Danish government and the White House counsel's office has looked into the possibility, two sources told @CNN on Thursday.” cnn.it/31BloQi
.@washingtonpost puts the news in their business section: “The presidential request has bewildered aides, some of whom continue to believe it isn’t serious, but Trump has mentioned it for weeks.” washingtonpost.com/business/2019/…
As the country eagerly awaits news on whether we’re going to purchase Greenland, the President has no public events scheduled for tomorrow.
Greenland’s Foreign Ministry: “We're open for business, not for sale”
And a spokesman from the right-wing Danish People’s party: “I must say it as it is: the idea that Denmark should sell 50,000 citizens to the U.S. is completely insane.” google.com/amp/s/www.iris…
The quotes from Greenland and Danish politicians are amazing. theguardian.com/world/2019/aug…
