Narrator: The London Bridge attacker was given an 'extended determinate sentence' by the Court of Appeal in April 2013. This new sentence was introduced in December 2012 by the LASPO Act 2012 by the Conservative-led government. It confirmed automatic halfway release provision.
This is a complicated area. It is true that in 2008 the Labour government allowed automatic halfway release for a similar sentence called 'an extended sentence for public protection' but it was abolished by the 2012 Act before Khan was re-sentenced by the Court of Appeal.
Can a legal eagle validate this point? It is a very complicated area of sentencing with overlapping legislation that applied at different times.
