#CR17leaks is a test media can’t afford to fail. Those who were fearless in calling out #Zuma and the #Guptas cannot ignore the evidence: Ramaphosa’s team played dirty to win at conference by paying key supporters and journalists cum PR consultants.
The ruling party is so corrupt that this was likely the only way to win. But it’s not the media’s job to justify this - it’s job is to report it.
The forces seeking to promote populism are scary but when editors underestimate the intelligence of readers by presenting justifications, they become vulnerable to populist conspiracy theorists.
You’re right. I’m sure they didn’t. See thread.
The only way democracy has any meaning is for its defenders - media and judiciary - to avoid the traps of partisanship. Hard but necessary especially when constantly under attack.
Still, the media with its diversity and complexity will outlive politicians. It can’t do this - it can’t work for citizens - if it’s caught up in playing politics.
What does this mean? Firstly, having a watching brief on this app, rather than living on it. If it’s not healthy for regular folk it’s even less healthy for reporters and editors. Secondly, it would have meant being far more skeptic of CR before this point. Playing the long game.
Right now, it means not waving away these leaks because the PP happens to be ridiculous and incompetent. Find the sources, investigate the story - not CR vs PP but governing party vs the people.
That’s all I got. 🤷🏾♀️
