6 police officers coming at 6 sitting rebels.
... What's happening next?
*Play scary music*

πŸ˜„Yes, I am a normal rather young rather educated mother who never broke the law and I did this.

And here's why I will do it again.

/Thread
Yes I did take part of this double blockade organized by @ExtinctionR_SV We were about 100 rebels blocking two places in the round about. Here's some info about this event - that has not been reported by any media (!!!!!).
klimataktion.se/2019/08/19/akt…
@ExtinctionR_SV We went on a zebra crossing and just stayed there. For our security, a bike with several trailers was placed between us & the cars - some drivers can forget we are human beings - while activists ran from car to car distributing delicious home-made cakes & explaining the action.
@ExtinctionR_SV Many people around showed support, some drivers showed thumbs up, some did not open their windows to the activists and a small - but loud - minority (2) went out of their cars and started to yell at us... apparently one driver ended up hitting a cop! 😰
@ExtinctionR_SV Please note this action took place a saturday afternoon and that the blockade held 20 minutes. The minority of angry people just instantly ran out of their car immediately when we arrived unable to listen anything else. Ok not cool to be stopped... but little perspective please?
@ExtinctionR_SV We are in a climate emergency that nobody is remotely starting to take seriously in our government. One year ago: scientists said we needed immediate drastic actions to avert worst case scenario: we are talking of the collapse of our civilization! Children today have no future!
@ExtinctionR_SV How do we stop this madness? Because we signed petitions, voted, did demonstrations, we committed in multiple groups of activists & did multiples types of actions. What has happened? N.O.T.H.I.N.G
And the tragic thing is that most people don't even get the implications of this!
@ExtinctionR_SV They don't because while there is indeed some papers/news/documentaries here and there in media about the crisis, the vast majority of media space is dedicated to nonsense, advertisement & content that feed people's cognitive dissonance & lack of understanding of the emergency...
@ExtinctionR_SV this... when they don't serve us pure evil denial and "fake expertise" intended to sustain big corporations' profits to prevent consumers to actually start to consume responsibly. The result is a radical assault on democracy.
@ExtinctionR_SV People don't even realize there is an existential threat on their head! And yes, I am absolutely sure that if we would start to really inform - and stop misinforming - people, there would be a big majority of people supporting immediate drastic climate actions!
@ExtinctionR_SV But why sitting in the street you absurd hippie? Well, first, thanks for the compliment πŸ’ƒ, but I don't think I really belong to hippie people, sadly I am more that kind of not so fun people: πŸ€“
Anyway, I sat & will sit again in the streets, and will civil disobey again because
@ExtinctionR_SV ... it works!!!! See how the climate awareness of people in the UK has majorely been lifted post rebellion week, compared to pre-rebellion week? The thing is civil disobedience is a lot about TELLING THE TRUTH. Is there another to genuinely say: this has to stop...
@ExtinctionR_SV ...but by stopping it, physically, with your body, while accepting potential costs for this: being carried away by the police, being arrested, etc... Is there another way make visible "our rules are wrong"... but by choosing to break them? Now of course, for this to work, we need
@ExtinctionR_SV to be many. We need to have you as one of us!
... so our blockade can hold longer, so media start to be forced to talk about us. Again and again and again. Because this is an emergency. We have to behave like it is. And you know what? it will make you feel good:
@ExtinctionR_SV being with rebels completely attuned to the reality of the crisis, singing together, being in this together. Not to mention Swedish police here is quite nice with us: they didn't even arrested us! ... yes they scream "move!" ("flytta pΓ₯ dig!") and yes they have literally learnt
@ExtinctionR_SV to use their voice and body to scare us. But once you understand this as their role and you know that they actually do not try at any point to harm us in any way... then it is just about knowing what you have to do: the right thing. πŸ’šπŸŒβœŠ
So will you sit with us next time?
@ExtinctionR_SV The worst that can happen is that you get arrested with some other rebels...
It sounds to me like a pretty small thing to do if this can help us in any way to avert climate collapse! 😰

So yes I will redo this again. For my kids. For all kids.
I will #RebelForLove

If you have been wondering what I was thinking during that discussion about vacations around the globe, yes, it is the case that my brain was bleeding with pain.

Bleeding from the pain of the feelings YOU are prevented from processing.

/Thread
I mean, I know we should not blame and shame. Why? Essentially because it does not work. If you blame and shame you activate people's defenses, this reinforces denial. In short this is counter-productive. Ok.

BUT...

1
There is simply the case that you can't process emotionally the truth about climate change - not to mention how we paid and keep paying Putin's war crimes and organized mass murders - without processing many intense negative feelings, among which...

This week-end, when I wasn't playing football with my kids, I found time to read this: a swedish anthology about how to reach a sustainable transport system.

Read it if you want to get πŸ€―πŸ™„πŸ§

All is said p23 with a quote from someone at the Swedish Transport Administration that seems to affirm the importance of the "climate question" and then comes this subtle body language indication: [Laugh].

I know. Of the importance of transcribing body language.

Several chapters ask why @Trafikverket proves being unable to follow scientific guidelines. And several challenges are named. One is that growth comes first. Another is the belief that technology will saves us and business as usual is an option.

I have noticed the repetition of the (connected) ideas of "doing sacrifices" and "being heroes" in campaigning for individual climate actions. Honestly I see where it comes from but I think it is wrong, both because they are bad sellers but also ethically problematic.

/Thread
Sure individual actions can feel tough when you do make those choices, in good part because you are in a mourning process. But are they sacrifices? Are we heroes to do them? I really don't think so.

First because this mourning is not our end station...

2
So when we talk about sacrifice we only picture the negative, and that is because we do not yet see the positive. Personally I see that clearly with flying. First it felt crazy to stop and now I really wonder what I was even thinking putting myself in those flying machines...

Of course we desperately need to act at all possible levels including working towards *systematic*
- boycotting of ecocidal corporations
- denunciation of power structures everywhere
- denunciation of inequalities & discrimination

But the system wants *you* to see yourself...
as an individual so you feel disconnected from this system *you* have been made a part of, precisely to disempower you; so you remain blind to these power structures, inequalities & discrimination that are weaponized against us all; so you feel helpless & choose passivity...

2
In fact you're not an isolated individual. You are a member of the world community, you have a position in this mess, you have a role, you can check your own power & place and act from there. This is not so much your individual action that we need than your active reconnecting

Every day I am talking with my kids about the environmental crisis. It is about what we eat, why we take public transportation, do not fly, it is about the birds, insects, flowers in our garden, etc...: the beauty, the destruction & its causes, our agency.

My kids are 3 and 5.
They understand better than many adults. They care. And my 5 years old has a lot of questions. So we have multiple ongoing conversations to process all this. Often he asks: "but why do people do that if it is bad?" Good question I say. We take it slowly, step by step.

2
I say for instance: well people have not understood, so this why we are trying to tell them. In fact this is what we do when we "save Earth", I say. "Saving Earth" has become a synonym of climate activism in my family...

I did it! I spent 20 minutes presenting a ppt on "The phenomenology of Evil in the age of the climate crisis" in front of very smart people with a thing for psychoanalysis and philosophy...

What did they learn?
What did I learn?

/Thread
Count on me for repeating that we are running towards mass murder of humanity... I did it like 10 times at least. That is actually tough to repeat it so much in front of people without defensively falling in cynical mode to avoid trembling... So I trembled. ...but did they?
This unfortunately I cannot tell... but I believe in deconstructing people's denial in front of people... in denial! ...so they know I know they refuse to know and I tell them why... hopefully it gets people thinking more than the truth itself... should it be only 1 person...
