A short thread on the phenomenon of leaders losing "faith:"
Even for people who feel like they find liberation on the other side, the process of losing faith is profoundly scary & alienating. I can't imagine speaking of anyone going through a faith shift without tenderness.
My take on the "hot takes" after a few high profile examples of said shifts--is that it proves Paul's maxim, "you have not many fathers." Hearing such stories without empathy is beyond me. Like @Franklin_Graham on w/Todd Starnes--man, imagine if he was the father of the prodigal?
@Franklin_Graham The father gave his son room to take the journey he needed to take--he even financed the trip. The @Franklin_Grahams of the world wouldn't give you the inheritance, just a lecture. Of course he's decided to be known among Fox & friends rather than to be among the friends of Jesus
@Franklin_Graham Even ASKING faith leaders like him what to make of these stories, is like asking the father of battered kids why they think their children ran away. Why the hell should anybody care what you think?
@Franklin_Graham That said, I DO find it unfortunate that so many people I meet seem to feel like they have only two alternatives: white evangelicalism or atheism. Friend, I won't judge you if you take either or neither of those roads. But white evangelicalism is not "the faith."
@Franklin_Graham But more on that another time. I find it astonishing that there are people who actually think that the disillusioned, disenchanted children of the Church who walk away, are somehow "the problem," as if it is some great falling away.
@Franklin_Graham I hate to spoil the end of the movie for you, but for much of white evangelicalism, the story is not that any particular people left the house, but that the Holy Ghost did. The falling away already happened. A lot of what is happening now, long term, will prove to be an awakening
@Franklin_Graham I'm just tired of hearing people berate their kids for leaving a faith system that we handed to them that was already rotting and full of maggots. I won't be more poetic about it than that.
@Franklin_Graham I love Jesus. More than ever in my life. I love the Church, serve the Church, am a product of the Church. But I have no judgement for anyone who leaves. The people of God need to discern the purposes of God in this shaking, & stop blaming & scapegoating our daughters & sons.

So much noise.
So many voices.
All the time.
Even when you try to listen to good, constructive ones, the sound in your head can be overwhelming, paralyzing.

I just want to remind you today to listen to the still, small one.

Remember who you are...beloved daughter, beloved son.
Remember who you are, & who you have always been.

Remember who that voice says that you are.

Remember the love that you came from, & back to which you yet must go.

Your history matters, but you are not the sum of your history.

So remember the future, too.
Come back, to you.

Return to your self.

Come home, to the home inside you.

You don't have to travel to get there.

God is inside.

You get to be at home wherever you are, right now.

Wherever you are now is where Love is, where God is, where home is.

Tied up speaking all weekend, & late to the game catching up on all the John MacArthur hot takes. Historically, I’ve not engaged him for the precise same reason I do not debate flat earthers: even responding to his words feels potentially dignifying to work deserving of none.
That said, I am who I am today b/c powerful Pentecostal women preachers shaped my life early, starting w/Sister Margaret Gaines. I’m filled with ache missing her voice right now. So I’ll be your huckleberry on this one—b/c this is one of the few things I’ll have a bar fight over.
First off—John MacArthur is NOT a scholar. If you went to a college that even accepted him as a source for a paper—I feel bad for you, son. I’m all for take the meat & throw out bones, but racism & misogyny have never been peripheral features of his project...but driving energy.

Thread:

There is so much horror in the world, many terrors for people to fear. Yet so many people live every moment of their lives with a sincere conviction that God is the greatest terrorist of them all.
It relativizes every other fear—because whatever horrors may come, none are so fearsome as the monster who lies in wait on the other side of the veil. ⁣
The bloodlust of the shooter—youthful acne still on his face, hate and angst running hot in his blood—may have been satiated by the bodies under the seasick florescent lights in the store.

The storm inside the last 24 hours has been raging too much to think straight, much less find words. I'm grateful for those that can--I don't claim to feel more deeply than anyone else. Just an acknowledgment of my limitations: I haven't felt coherent, much less constructive.
Disclaimer: I have strong feelings about guns in America. In my bumbling way, I'm attempting to follow the Christ who once & for all told Peter "put away your sword." The contrast between the way of the sword/the way of the gun is stark, & you cannot serve two masters.
So for the record: no, I can't comprehend a nation that has more guns than people, nor how no terror inflicted vile enough for their to be full consensus about even basic gun reform; & for that matter, I consider the @NRA a terrorist, antichrist organization, full-stop.

Intuitively, people who have had any kind of real experience with God often have a deep inner knowing (or at least deep suspicion) that God may turn out to be more beautiful than they thought. But they don’t have a head construct for what the heart knows.
When your life is finally blown open to see the trajectory of grace in all things, it can come as a happy surprise! Except of course—when it doesn’t.⁣⁣

Jonah saw the whole thing coming off the rails, long before Jesus of Nazareth got here.
He read it in the glory Hallelujah unalterable unchanging He-said-it-I-believe-it-that-settles-it Word of the Living God:”The Lord, the Lord, merciful & gracious, slow to anger, & abounding in steadfast love & faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation...”

The gospel of grace is shocking, scandalous, & offensive when rightly understood. Nothing drives me more bananas than when people try to water down the scandal w/moralism—or my MOST hated move—create some binary w/grace & something else, as if grace is just one end of a seesaw.
The most “Biblical” sounding way people do it is to use John 1.14, which describes Jesus as “full of grace and truth.” This is taken to mean “well you need grace on one hand BUT you need to BALANCE it with truth”—which doesn’t get the construction right at all.
The idea is more that the truth of Christ is grounded in grace, that his truth IS gracious; that grace is the only truth there is. There is no binary here that allows you to moderate or temper grace with moralism.
