For anyone who cites the GERS figures as illustrating how it shows independence for Scotland would be impossible, I want to see suggestions of how we change it. Because either the figures are wrong or the current democratic settlement is broken.
Note I posted about this last year including @kevverage and @holland_tom as I was replying to tweets asking what needs tobe done because if we are so completely screwed financially then we should be proposing solutions.
@kevverage@holland_tom There always seems a hint of joy in the tone of those opposed to independence in the figures - see the #gersmas trend today. But we should all be aiming no matter what your position on independece is to have a country that is financially sound.
@kevverage@holland_tom If we really are the economic basket case of Europe despite the natural resources, then we are all doing something monumentally wrong, and getting excited about that as a way of stopping a policy is bizarre.
@kevverage@holland_tom And for those in favour of independence, you need to either up your game on the economic analysis to show if the figures are wrong, and the White Paper precisely didn't do that or...
@kevverage@holland_tom Provide a clear indication of how independence will change the situation, and just saying independence would be magic isn't enough. The sheer poverty of debate round this, which reflects much other political debate, makes today very sad as...
@kevverage@holland_tom We see people content to just accept something where we apparently create 60% of the UK debt in a year, and yet aren't bathing in public services that have taps for milk, honey, and Irn Bru.
@kevverage@holland_tom Part of me leans to independence because we currently have power with no real responsibility as regards this. It becomes a mere discussion point rather than the driving force in public policy. And while I am tempted to just shout a plague on both your houses, we have to be better
@FemmeLoves I'll preface this by saying that when I use we/our I am generalising not just about men as a category but also about individuals as they will be different at different times.
First of physically we just are very penis centric. There are other erogeneous bits but... 1/?
@FemmeLoves Then psychologically that all gets tied up with expectation, and the idea that it is our 'manhood'. If that fails we've failed maniness.
Add to that as a group we are both literally + figuratively a bunch of pricks. The competitive drive on all things means we are vicious..2/?
@FemmeLoves To each other. If you can't get it up, you can't breed. You become worthless. Note all of this is deeper than cultural. It's part of our make up - that doesn't mean that we can't deal with it.
Next, when we go through adolescence the idea of not being able to get an erection 3/?
Many of you will have seen posts from me about being gender critical, about standing up for women's sex based rights and spaces
I have friends of many different political persuasions. They give me much joy. The common factors are about what I regard as basic human rights.
Can I just ask if you don't believe in women's sex based rights and spaces, then please defriend me? It's a shibboleth for me, just as I won't be friends with racists.
And I could, and will do the work myself of getting rid of people who oppose women's sex based rights and spaces
And if you are not sure what I mean, if you think the cheating bloke here in the link below is ok, defriend me now because you are misogynist.
So some thoughts on attending the Men Supporting Women meeting in Glasgow yesterday, organised by @MichealConraoi, to whom I offer huge thanks. First thank you to all the speakers, it was an excellent mix of perspectives. Secondly thanks to the attendees and the points and... 1/?
@MichealConraoi Questions raised. It felt genuinely collaborative in seeking ways to save same sex protection for women. As many stressed this was a cross party and no party grouping, but it did feel to me as if the majority of persepectives were left wing... 2/?
@MichealConraoi It was a bit disappointing to not have more men but at the same time I enjoyed a meeting about how men could support women where women's voices were in the majority. That said @underaredflag's speech about how this was not an issue for men... 3/?
