The Nov 2016 earthquake created challenges to IP authentication and necessitated agile working

New normal for Stats NZ is a digital focus, more material archived digitally.

For print, ten pallets of books were recovered from Centrepoint. Collections were also donated.

An ongoing challenge is to create a physical presence.

Trying to manage expectations around realistic timeframes for re-entry was challenging

Temporary service delivery stations set up quickly with basics for issuing and returning and sessions for borrowers on using ebooks

Many clients were very supportive, checking in asking if they could help and bringing chocolate ❤️

Good communication with staff is key, even a text message.

A massage therapist came in to massage tired legs. Climbing from level 2 to 7 all day was tiring!

A dark sense of humour helped many!

You may need to override usual organisational process to get things done quickly.

Trust your people on the ground. Full access to the building took 2 years. Working with Disability Services was essential.

Positive outcomes - more academics using eBooks and online course management tools. Sector support with interloans much appreciated!

Challenge - were are we all going to meet after the building is closed? How do you find a warehouse? How much is it all going to cost?!

How do we help our staff through this time? Some staff had been in the @wcl_library building since it had opened 28 years ago.

Managing media interest and politicians was challenging. What's true or not?

Huge positive response from the public wanting to know that everyone was okay. Heartwarming...

Leading up to the evacuation there had been discussions with the engineers so a plan could be made if the worst case scenario happened.

Have established relationships beforehand within IT and property teams and organisations outside like @NLNZ was crucial.

Achieving a pop-up very quickly was important for both staff and public moral. Also created a sense of trust with Council.

Good communication with staff was essential. Important to focus on staff well-being. SPCA puppies for therapy and massages!

There's a sense of sadness and loss for what has happened but also a hope for doing things in new ways, such as pop-ups around the city.

Common themes across these talks are that colleagues are very important and finding new ways of doing things!
