I see more people (like @xeni) starting to call out Jeffrey Epstein's connections to scientists who helped him clean his pedo image. Let me tell you about the one who not only quietly took his money but vociferously supported him AFTER Epstein's conviction: Lawrence Krauss
1/12
I've been covering this since 2011. Epstein had already been convicted of raping underage girls when he gave Krauss $250k for his Origins Project. Krauss said "I don’t feel tarnished in any way by my relationship with Jeffrey; I feel raised by it.” skepchick.org/2011/04/lawren…
2/12
Krauss used his position as a respected scientist to convince ppl that Epstein's victims were liars: "As a scientist I always judge things on empirical evidence and he always has women ages 19 to 23 around him, but I’ve never seen anything else..."
3/12
"...so as a scientist, my presumption is that whatever the problems were I would believe him over other people." I couldn't believe he'd say this so I emailed him & asked him to clarify. Krauss doubled down, saying among other things that Epstein was the victim.
4/12
In a follow-up comment Lawrence Krauss suggests that the minors Epstein raped were actually just after his money. He also mentions a rumor that Krauss was involved in orgies on Epstein's island. I checked that, and funny thing...
5/12
All I could find was a man claiming in 2006 that he saw "Nobel scientists" & Alexander Sokol engaging in "barely legal" orgies on Epstein's island. Krauss wasn't named, but it's clear now that this was the event Krauss organized in 2006. dealbreaker.com/2006/08/epstei…
6/12
Strange that Krauss would volunteer that he definitely did NOT participate in an orgy that none of us (at the time) knew he was rumored to have participated in. 🤔
7/12
Fast forward to 2015, when more of Jeffrey Epstein's victims were coming forward to fight for justice. Lawrence Krauss still didn't hesitate to publicly speak up for him, telling Reuters "His interest is in interesting people and interesting ideas." skepchick.org/2015/02/scient…
8/12
By now I'd heard about Lawrence Krauss's own creepy behavior. I knew of a woman he propositioned on a @center4inquiry Cruise who complained to CFI. They buried the complaint & invited Krauss back on another cruise. CFI is now run by Krauss's good friend, Richard Dawkins
9/12
Eventually Buzzfeed contacted me asking for dirt, which I happily supplied. After their article on his many misdeeds, he was finally "asked to retire" from ASU and the Origins project that Jeffrey Epstein funded. buzzfeednews.com/article/petera…
10/12
Lawrence Krauss now has a new Origins project: a podcast, with celebs like @pennjillette, @GailCollins, @rickygervais, and @DrBrianMay. AFAIK he hasn't commented publicly on his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein since 2015 but I may have missed it in all the recent news.
11/12
If you're wondering why you didn't know all of this back when it was happening, it's because you don't follow @Skepchicks. We police our own. Loving science and critical thinking doesn't mean you have to look up to rapists & douchebags. xo

Last year I promoted physicist Sabine Hossenfelder's YouTube channel, so I figured I should probably comment on her video last week, in which she takes the moderate position between both "crazy" sides of the trans "debate." skepchick.org/2023/05/physic…
I went through Hossenfelder's video line by line and found it to be a mixed bag: some good and accurate information that sits alongside citation-free assertions, like "doctors in clinics report cases of 'rapid onset of gender dysphoria."
The main issue was false balance: a misleading preliminary survey of transphobes on an internet forum who came up with "rapid onset of gender dysphoria" (eventually corrected by PLOS One along with an apology) is considered equal to a study that found no such thing exists. ImageImage

Buckle up, here's a new video on why Jon Stewart is 100% WRONG about how we should "engage" with Joe Rogan. skepchick.org/2022/02/jon-st…
On a recent episode of his show, The Problem with Jon Stewart, Stewart claims Rogan is not an ideologue. He points to Rogan's talk with Josh Zepps as a good example. skepchick.org/2022/02/jon-st…
Rogan spouted misinformation, Zepps corrected it. In this "good example" Rogan continued to insist he was right long past the time everyone could see he was wrong, ending by mumbling nonsense. skepchick.org/2022/02/jon-st…

A new study found that conservative think tanks and blogs have been running a coordinated disinformation campaign to lie to the general public about climate change to benefit the fossil fuel industry. The level of detail in the study is impressive 1/5
Researchers built an AI that analyzed ~250,000 climate change documents released by rightwing groups over the past 20 years, finding 5 major lies:
1) It's not happening
2) It's not us
3) It's not bad
4) Solutions won't work
5) We can't trust scientists
2/5
skepchick.org/2021/11/study-…
They plotted the incidence of those lies over time, finding that the first 3 got less popular as the science got more undeniable. The popularity of #4 (policies don't work) peaked every time a climate change bill was introduced in Congress. 3/5 skepchick.org/2021/11/study-…

Last month a patron asked me what the deal is with ivermectin. That sent me down a rabbit hole to figure out WHY people started taking dewormer for a virus in the first place. Turns out that there's real science behind it! Way behind it. But it's there. skepchick.org/2021/08/why-ar…
Here's the tl;dr for those who hate to leave this hellsite: ivermectin is an anti-parasite that is generally safe for humans. But like many meds, it can do double duty: past research has shown it can slow the replication of certain viruses in petri dishes. 2/5
So it made sense for scientists to see if it works for SARS-CoV-2, too. And it does! But like with other viruses, it ONLY works in a petri dish with MASSIVE amounts of ivermectin. 3/5

Well, fire season is upon us, and it's always earthquake season in the Bay Area, so I sat down to go through our emergency kit and go bags. I made a list of everything, checked expiration dates, and am now replacing food, charging batteries, and adding some things. 1/5
I'm no expert but maybe it's helpful for people who don't know how to make an emergency kit to see what my setup is. The big container is from Costco & contains heavier, less essential items. My partner & I each have an old backpack filled with the most important stuff. 2/5
Water is the biggest issue. You need 1 gallon per person per day -- heavy & takes up a lot of space. I bought packets that are good for another 3 years. Cans of food you'll actually wanna eat, a can opener, dog food, TP & other hygiene stuff, tools, a tarp, & of course N95s. 3/5

So it turns out that an organization I thought was doing good work, the False Memory Syndrome Foundation (associated with Center for Inquiry, James Randi, and Martin Gardner) was actually caping for pedophiles. Uhhhh oops?
Since this, bizarrely, turned out to be one of my longest videos ever (??) here's a quick thread to sum it up for those of you like myself with short attention spans. 1/10
In the '90s the False Memory Syndrome Foundation was founded to call attention to the problem of adults suddenly "remembering" child abuse that never actually happened, often under hypnosis. Skeptics like James Randi & Martin Gardner joined their board. 2/10
